Fucking West Coast Junkies can afford Starbucks?!?!

Move was made in response to viral video on social media showing two black men arrested after employees asked them to leave for not buying anything

Ooooh, well then, just tell the baristas to kick their junkie friends out. SMDH

Why are people angry about this?

The needles are going to be left in public restrooms no matter what, having a box to toss in old needles isn't going to worsen the problem. It'll just contain the HIV and keep the workers safe so a medical disposal company can deal with it.

'They were so alarmed by the incident that they rushed to take antiviral medications to protect them from AIDS and hepatitis, according to KIRO-TV.
They said it cost nearly $2,000 each to obtain the medicine, which they paid for with loans or on credit."

Ummm, why the hell should these employees foot the bills for this on-the-job injury?

I'm guessing part of the problem is that if jumkies were worried about what they do with their needles they wouldn't be leaving them any old place anyway. So I don't see where a hazmat sharps container is going to to stop them leaving them where ever.

I used to have a dirty clothes basket in every bedroom and in the bathroom, guess where the dirty clothes always were? Yep, on the floor in front of the basket, or under the bed.

Don't see where the hazmat containers will make any difference at all.

Cities that have trash receptacles located in the public right-of-ways suffer from far less littering than cities where you'd have to hold your trash indefinitely where people just toss their crap on the street. People are indeed lazy as hell, but if they are going to walk by a trash can in a few feet anyway they're far more likely to use that. I think this is the same. It doesn't take extra effort to shove the needle in a sharps box versus a trash bag that can be stabbed through, so I think it's definitely worth a shot.

Also, I'm sure there are a handful of responsible diabetics who will be pleased as well.

All these broken people on drugs everywhere, even in Starbucks.

The Starbucks in Toronto down town are pretty bad ... I'd say it wasn't because of the homeless and junkies but it is ... its exactly that.

I guess you might be right with all those receptacle about it wil lmake it a whole easier for the people who are cleaning them up to get them to an appropriate container. I still think the people that use them and would throw them on the ground or where ever will still just put them where ever.

The diabetics I know wouldn't have put them in a public receptacle anyway, they'd have kept them with them and put them in their own sharps container, basically to keep someone who would reuse a syringe from accidentally killing themselves if there is still insulin in the needle.

Meh. I think this is all media spin. Sharps bins are really there for diabetics who require counteractive measures from Starbucks' beverages and need to safely dispose their syringes. Better to blame the change on drug users than to acknowledge their very own sugar-laden crap.

Personally, I'm not angry, I'm annoyed. Living in Portland there is quite literally a Starbucks on every freaking corner. It feels like enabling to me. I don't want to have to wade through a mess and the problems created by large numbers of homeless/drug addicts just to try and get a burrito on my 30 minute lunch break when my burrito is on the other side of the Starbucks.

But the junkies are already there. Having a box to dump needles in isn’t going to create addicts, it’s just going to reduce the risk of people getting stabbed. No one is going to see the box for sharps and think “You know, today seems like a nice day to start to shoot up since I have somewhere to discard my needles.” Nor are junkies going to choose a specific restaurant to shoot up in, just because of a box. I don’t know what it’s enabling beyond responsible disposal.

Word ... the diabetics came first!

No, we don't, most people think we're fatties who stuffed our faces with too many ding dongs and made ourselves sick. But whatever.

I never said that. My Grandfather was Diabetic, he was a healthy weight all his life. Maltese, Mediterranean diet. Active life style. My point was that the BIO boxes in washrooms were not initially intended for addicts. I wasn't agreeing with the sugar laden bull shit part ... Fuck that.

People are annoyed because Starbucks "let anyone in even if they don't pay" policy is bringing in undesirable people paying customers don't want to meet.
YAY for $1 McDonalds coffee for the caffeine pick me up.

I have never been in a public restroom with a needle disposal box.
:rolleyes:maybe we visit different kinds of establishments.

Seriously. We went to dinner tonight at the casino buffet. There is a box on the wall for needles in every bathroom there.
I get gas at ampm mini Mart there is one there. And Walmart and Costco.

@Keepalowprofile
Different counties?
It is well known I am a rural recluse. I'm sheltered. In the last year, I've been to restrooms at Mcdonalds, safeway, CVS, a high end very PC organic supermarket, and a chinese restaurant where the unisex restroom was also a pantry. (Wish I'd used the restroom first, not at the end! I'll never go there again, but the food was great.)
No needle boxes. I asked an aquaintance who shops all the time and has prostate trouble, so pees all the time. He says he's never noticed a needle box. Maybe he is unobservant.

Agreed. However, some of the McDonalds in my area have started having to lock the bathrooms so you need a code to get in. When I asked why, they said it was because so many homeless people and junkies were messing up the bathrooms. I live in the suburbs, so high numbers of homeless people is a newer trend in this area. I sometimes kill time at McD's between appointments if I don't want to drive all the way back home. They have free WiFi and decent iced tea.

Well, Starbucks had to bend over and take this crap, or have allegations of 'Raysis!" thrown at them after those two black guys who didn't want to buy anything refused the managers directions to leave and got arrested.

This is actually a really good analogy for the USA as a whole at the moment. "Let everyone in, regardless of whether they contribute or not, and put up with the negative effects, or RAYSIS!!!.

.

Or they could just train their employees not to discriminate against black people or other people of color. Seems like a much better solution.

And the 2 black guys did not refuse to buy, they merely said they were waiting for someone and would order all together. Since whites at that Starbucks were allowed to do that, it actually was discrimination.

No, we don't, most people think we're (ETA: type 2) fatties who stuffed our faces with too many ding dongs and made ourselves sick. But whatever.

I'll give you that, cubby. Starbucks makes lattes with lowfat milk, which is high in natural lactose sugars. A plain venti latte sounds innocent, but it contains 18g sugar from the milk. Best to have that slowly on a full stomach to slow down how fast its metabolized. Or get an Americano. :cat:

Starbucks popularity tanking, they’re desperately going after any customer they can find, in doing so they’re losing even more business
Starbucks revenue has been going down for the last seven quarters, they closed about 200 or more outlets last year and will probably close many more this year
I hate their burnt tasting coffee, prefer Peet’s
But always make a point of using Starbucks bathroom:)

My free foods include, air, water, ice, mustard and lemons. What a diet huh?
So you could make a lemon & mustard slushie. Winning!

I live in the capitol of my state and I've never seen a needle disposal box in a restroom.
I live in a suburb of a big city and I have only seen them at medical centers and hospitals.

But always make a point of using Starbucks bathroom:)
Because of the handy needle disposal box. Am I right?? :p

My firm does meetings/forums at Marriott's a lot and I remember sometime in the last 10yrs they started "featuring" Starbucks coffee at their meetings. I was like, can you bring back the house blend?? I've always thought Starbucks coffee was nasty too.
