A cat is recovering after being found with its eyes sealed shut Thursday.

Columbia’s Veterinary Emergency Trauma and Specialty Center in South Carolina has been nursing the cat back to health.
The facility received her with a glue-like substance on her face and body.

“She couldn’t look out of [her eyes] at all, her nose had [a substance] in both nostrils, at least partially [obstructing] her breathing, and she had [part] of her mouth closed essentially with glue all the way covering the top of her head, ears, and portions of her neck,” Dr. Wynter Gantt said.
Gantt and the team of nurses started by removing the substance stuck to the cat, while giving her plenty of food, water and rest.

They said they believe the feline is one to three years old and is expected to survive.

“She definitely can see out of her left eye. She’s eating on her own now which is great, [and] she’s showing signs of making a recovery,” Gantt said. “I think the issues for her long-term are going to be what types of skin damage she has and does she need surgery, and then from there, what her eyes, mouth and mucus membranes are going to do because sometimes those are things that can affect them long-term if they get scars there.”

You mean Elma or is she going to be gender fluid in your home :cat:
No, it'd be Elmer. Because of Elmer's Glue. We're into odd, humorous names in my family. When I was about six, my Mom found what had to have been the ugliest kittus in creation in 1976, so she named her Beauty. Then there was the female Stalin kitty that just passed away in 2023. And my Joie, full name Johannesburg, because she was mostly black with a little bit of white on her (tuxedo cat)... Elmer would fit right in! :cat:

Update 12/19/2024: VICTORY! 29-year-old Rashad Lewis Simmons adopted Emmie on July 1, 2024. Three days later on July 4, Emmie was found covered in glue. Simmons was arrested on December 5 thanks to you and the immediate investigation into this horrific act. Animal Victory will now fight for the Maximum Punishment! Please continue to sign this petition!
Emmie Now – She has been adopted. As per the Humane Society doc. “The Humane Society extends their heartfelt gratitude to all individuals and organizations involved in Emmie’s rescue and rehabilitation, as well as to the RCSD and CPD for their assistance in this investigation.”

It is so terrifying that people adopt animals just to torture them! You don't know who to trust. It's to the point that if I ever had to give away an animal...I would want to 1) deliver them so I know the address and 2) have a contract where they have to send videos every once and a while with the animal next to something like a phone or newspaper with the date on it! Or I will pop tf up at the house. Lmao. I would just be so scared I gave a fur baby to a psychopath.

Final Update 7/16/2025: Rashad Lewis Simmons pled “nolo contendere” which means he pled no contest to the charges. This means he did NOT plead guilty and is not admitting guilt, but is accepting the consequences of a guilty plea, nonetheless. His plea was on 01/10/2025. He was not sentenced to any jail time; however, he was fined $478.95. This is in addition to the $465 bond he submitted as a personal recognizance bond. We are disappointed in this outcome but pleased that shining a light on the case led to the identification of the person responsible. We thank everyone who signed the petition, helping to bring some semblance of justice to Emmie.
