A 1-year-old girl is dead and her father is charged with vehicular homicide following a Wednesday afternoon crash on Route 55 in Gloucester County.

The dad, Leroy M. Iglesia, 34, of Blackwood, was intoxicated, police said. Elowen Iglesia, of Williamstown, died of her injuries in the crash, police said.

Iglesia was driving southbound on Route 55 near milepost 52.8 in Mantua Township just after 2 p.m. when his minivan ran off the right side of the road and struck two trees, according to New Jersey State Police.

The vehicle careened back onto the road and came to rest in the middle of the highway.

Authorities said it’s not clear if Elowen was properly restrained in a child safety seat at the time, police said. The investigation is ongoing.

Iglesia is charged with strict liability reckless vehicular homicide, vehicular homicide, crash with a fatality while driving while suspended, endangering the welfare of a child and driving while intoxicated.

He was placed in Salem County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing.

A Blackwood man faces more than four years in prison after admitting he was intoxicated when the minivan he was driving veered off a state highway and slammed into trees, killing his 1-year-old daughter.

Leroy M. Iglesia, 34, pleaded guilty Dec. 5 to a second-degree charge of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence in the Oct. 9 wreck.

Elowen Iglesia, of Williamstown, died of her injuries.

Her father was charged with strict liability reckless vehicular homicide, vehicular homicide, crash with a fatality while driving while suspended, endangering the welfare of a child and driving while intoxicated.

Iglesia was also charged with possession of crack cocaine and heroin.

Under his plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend a five-year prison term, with a requirement that he serve 85% of that time before he is eligible for parole. The agreement includes three years of parole.
