Police say a man in Wayne County abused an 18-month-old child so badly the boy was taken to a trauma center to be treated for injuries all over his body.

Investigators say the alleged child abuse happened Monday morning in Wayne County.

The child is recovering from a possible concussion, and the man accused of the abuse is behind bars.

According to court papers, the 18-month-old boy was at an apartment on in Honesdale when a worker with Wayne County Children and Youth Services discovered the injuries and notified police.

Police then arrested Dustin Hazen, 27, and charged him with assaulting the boy.

Court papers indicate the child had bruises and cuts all over his face, head, neck, chest, back, and private parts.

The boy was taken to Geisinger Medical Center near Danville for treatment.

Investigators believe Hazen beat and strangled the child, and now he's facing a charge of attempted homicide.

Hazen stayed quiet and wouldn't say what happened to the child. However, investigators say medical professionals checked out the 18-month-old boy and found he could have had a concussion.

There is no word on the child's condition. At last check, he was still being treated for his injuries.

On June 18, 2020, Dustin Hazen, 28, of Honesdale, was sentenced by President Judge Janine Edwards to the State Correctional Institution for a period of not less than 36 months and no more than 120 months for one count of strangulation.

The incident occurred on April 15, 2019, Hazen was the prime custodian of the 18-month-old victim. When they arrived at the scene, the victim had sustained injuries that required immediate medical attention at Wayne Memorial Hospital. The injuries were noted as multiple contusions, abrasions, and lacerations all over the child’s body, mostly on his face and head.

When Hazen was questioned about what had happened he said “he saw nothing” and “he may have bumped his head on toys in the play pen because that is where he spent most of his time." In addition to those statements, Hazen also offered several times that “the baby had only thrown up but otherwise he was fine.”

Hazen admitted that he had gotten mad that the baby had thrown up and that he had strangled the baby. Tragically, the baby died several months after the attack but the autopsy report could not conclusively link the assault by Hazen to the child’s eventual death.
