I don't usually post missing kids. It is something that really gets to me. I know a lot of them are runaways but that doesn't make it any less dangerous. My daughter is the same age as this girl. I would freak if she was missing for 30 minutes much less days. I really hope this family finds her soon!

Hailey, 13, was last seen walking from her home to a friend’s house about 1 p.m. last Monday, according to police. She had intended to spend the night with her friend, Interim Police Chief John Bivins told Colorado City radio station KVMC/KAUM.

A reward for information leading to the teenager’s return started at $1,000 from the Colorado City Police Department, climbed to $4,500 and now stands at $10,000, according to Jim Baum, owner of KVMC/KAUM.

Because police do not believe Hailey has met with foul play, a statewide Amber Alert has not been issued.

According to an article posted Friday on the Colorado City Record website, Bivins said his department considers Hailey a runaway.

“That’s what the evidence shows at the time,” Bivins said.

But the more days Dunn stays missing, the concern continues to grow.

“To me, I think it’d be more than just considered runaway,” Mitchell County Sheriff Patrick Toombs told the Reporter-News on Sunday night. His agency has interviewed several of Hailey’s classmates to help Colorado City police. Toombs said Texas Rangers also have assisted in the case.

While Toombs said his agency was only assisting Colorado City, Hailey’s disappearance remains a mystery, he said.

“It’s really unknown,” Toombs said. He said he wasn’t aware that anything has been ruled out, calling some sort of abduction or coercion “still a possibility.”

“But, right now, we have not been able to confirm or deny that, of how she disappeared from town,” Toombs said.

However, the Mitchell County community, Baum said, is gravely concerned for the teen’s safety.

“The people who knew her and her character do not believe she’d just take off and run away,” he said. “It doesn’t fit.

“They feel like there is foul play.”

Baum said Hailey’s mother became alarmed about her daughter’s whereabouts when she did not return home Tuesday.

“It just wasn’t like her” to vanish, Baum said. “She is real popular with her teachers and with those she goes to school with.”

He said there were about 800 candles ready for the Sunday night prayer vigil, at which several ministers spoke and asked those attending to pray for Hailey, her family and “those she might be with.”

Hailey is 5-foot-1 and 120 pounds.

Her eyes are hazel and her hair is described as brown with blondish streaks.

OMG I cant stand when they dont issue the Amber alert! Are any of her friends missing? Have they checked all their houses? BF?? Computer? Maybe she went to meet some online predator. UGH!!!! Don't tell me she didn't meet with foul play because there is no evidence. Popular cheerleaders dont usually run away right before Christmas. I hope she is found soon, safe and unharmed.

Wait, what?
Sorry, totallytoddler, gotta disagree with you. It doesn't matter if she's a "popular cheerleader". Kids run away regardless. Especially if they have a disagreement with their parents.
I've no doubt there is more to this than meets the eye. She IS at a friends house but that friend lied about not seeing her and likely her own parents don't know Hailey is there.
I'm saying 3 more days for this girl to go home.

This does not come close to the very specific criteria needed for an Amber Alert. If they issued AAs on every missing kid, they would become useless. Totally defeats the purpose.

An estimated 750 people attended a prayer vigil for missing teenager Hailey Dunn on Sunday night at Colorado Middle School in Colorado City.

If the police haven't checked her computer, I'm willing to bet her parents have.

For the gazillionth time, you CANT, I repeat, CANNOT issue an Amber Alert without sufficient descriptive information about the suspect. Regardless if it appears the child met with foul play or not, regardless of the race, or the age or if it is out of character for the kid to take off, you still have to have information pertaining to a suspect or a suspects vehicle.

I saw a bit about this on NG (I know, I know) and I'm curious about the timeline. I don't know that anyone actually SAW her walking to her friend's house. I heard that the mother's boyfriend came home & she told him she was running over to her dad's house nearby, then going to her friend's to spend the night. She asked him to pass that info on to her mom (he says). So the mother's boyfriend was the last person to see Hailey - as I understand it. The mother tried to track Hailey down the next day and that's when she discovered that Hailey hadn't made it to her Dad's or the friend's. And if she disappeared between her house and her Dad's...that's a pretty short time frame because I think her father lives across the street.
Not sure why the girl is suspected to be a runaway; her family and friends don't think that's the case. I think that if she did run away one of her friends would be 'in the know.'

That's ok. Did she have a disagreement with her parents before she left? Maybe I missed that....I've been known to do that. :/ And I guess I didnt mean just because she is a cheerleader she wouldnt run away. Just the timing and thinking of that little Jonathan kid on Christmas Eve. :(

And yes I know the criteria for Amber Alerts. All I said was I can't stand it. I just feel like there IS something more to this. There always is.

More - just read something that said the friend had no idea Hailey was coming over. What to make of that? Either mom's boyfriend is lying or maybe that was her cover story and she did run away. Still, I'm not leaning towards her running away. She didn't take anything with her.

Officials in Colorado City are continuing their efforts to discover evidence related to the disappearance of 13-year-old Colorado Middle School student Hailey Dunn.

Officials confirmed Wednesday that Shawn Adkins, the boyfriend of Hailey’s mother, has been administered a polygraph test. He was reportedly the last person who saw Hailey before she disappeared on Dec. 27.

Officials also confirmed that Hailey’s home was searched Wednesday for any clues that may have been missed earlier.

The search was conducted by the Texas Rangers, who looked through the home then spent 10 minutes in an outdoor storage shed.

Hailey’s mother, Billie Dunn, has said her daughter may have spoken to friends on Dec. 27 after her last reported sighting.

According to the “Nancy Grace” television show, aired Tuesday night, bloodhounds have been used and possibly tracked Hailey’s scent to a local motel – although a search of the motel and review of the motel security videotape apparently revealed no other evidence.

Colorado City City Manager Pete Kampfer, speaking on behalf of the Colorado City police, said he was unable to comment on the details of the investigation but said they are becoming more defined.

After a meeting with law enforcement Wednesday afternoon, Kampfer said that Texas Rangers are arriving at a better focus in the case. Kampfer described the investigation as “instead of shooting at a barn side” law enforcement agents are “getting down to the door.”

Kampfer said the department has looked into issuing an Amber Alert, but that her case does not meet the criteria, which include knowing she had gone in a type of vehicle or in a direction.

What began as a small town search is now a full blown national story as 13 year old Hailey Dunn remains missing nine days after her sudden disappearance on Monday December 27th.

Today it appeared that authorities were handling the case less like a runaway scenario and more like a criminal investigation of possible foul play.

The center of the investigation appeared to be the Dunn household at the corner of 18th and Chestnut in Colorado City, where the Texas Rangers combed through Hailey’s room and searched the backyard.

With cooperation and assistance from Colorado City Police, the Rangers opened a backyard shed and searched other parts of the property for details.

The Texas Ranger investigators declined interview requests with CBS 7 but Hailey’s mother, Billie Dunn, said the Rangers were looking for any clues or signs that might point out where Hailey went.

Wednesday afternoon Billie told CBS 7 that her boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, was with authorities taking a polygraph test.
[...]

However, at about 8:00pm, Hailey’s older brother David told our CBS 7 crew that Shawn had refused to take two polygraph tests Wednesday.

David says that Shawn signed the paperwork to take a third but then refused to take it and left the building.

According to David, the Dunn family and police had not seen Shawn since that last polygraph refusal.

Hailey’s two uncles corroborated that story but police are not releasing information about any polygraph tests at this time.

Hailey’s uncle Dale says he took a polygraph test and passed it and added that Billie may have taken one Wednesday night as well.

As of 8:00pm Wednesday night, Billie Jean Dunn was not at her home and her family believed she was in downtown Colorado City with law enforcement authorities.
[...]

Thousands of people have joined a page on www.facebook.com in support of Hailey's safe return home.

Billie Dunn says she's avoiding the website because of the variety of comments on the page, some of which are critical of her and boyfriend, Shawn Adkins.

When asked whether accusations of foul play surrounding her boyfriend are upsetting she said "no".

Billie explained that she expects people to suspect family members first because of the precedent set by many nationally reported missing child cases of the past.

I've been suspicious of the boyfriend from the beginning. If he has nothing to hide, why not just take the polygraph? He could easily get a lawyer (and he should, from the looks of it), and take an independent test before he took LE's.

Mom and boyfriend fail polygraph tests.

-- The mother of the missing Colorado City girl answered questions Thursday night on The Nancy Grace Show about several issues investigators haven't released to the media.

Billie Jean Dunn said both she and her live in boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, failed a polygraph test and that she has now lost faith in the test.

She also said that she asked Adkins to leave her home because she "didn't know what to think anymore." According to Billie Dunn, the boyfriend is now staying with his grandmother.

Meanwhile, the search for Hailey goes on. Search helicopters and billboards are now being used by law enforcement officials and family in the search for missing Colorado City teenager Hailey Dunn.

Dunn said she took the polygraph test after she was informed that Adkins had failed.

Woodrow Tripp, a polygraph expert, told Nancy Grace that troubles him.

''That absolutely would cause major problems emotionally as she's administered one. You want to try to minimize that as much as possible.''

Dunn did not say who administered the exam during which she says she was asked if she knew anything about or caused Hailey's disappearance and whether she feared any questions.

The night Hailey vanished, Dunn says she thought her daughter was sleeping over at a friend's house.

Asked why she did not confirm Hailey's location before going to bed that night, Dunn said, ''I just don't have an answer for that. I wish I would have called to tell her goodnight.''

Dunn says police questioned her for more than 10 hours on Wednesday.

She met Adkins on the MySpace social networking site more than two years ago and he moved in with her several months ago.

My main theory says the boyfriend did it, and the kid is dead. He was fired/quit that morning = triggering event. Even more telling is the reported rage issues. Thirteen year old girls are sassy, y'all. My guess is that Shawn decided it was a great day to play the rape game and Hailey resisted, possibly running and being followed to the motel where Shawn played nice long enough to get her in the car and back home. Cause of death is probably blunt force trauma to the head or strangulation, in that case.

It's barely possible that Hailey was meeting someone else, but I think that it would have been pretty easy to track that by now. If there's not a Myspace/Facebook guy named and being sought for questioning after two weeks, then that scenario is much less likely. And since she was being treated as a runaway for a week, I'm sure the first thing checked out was her online activity. Also, her scent did not lead into a motel room - it appears to stop right at the front door. So she was picked up there - but by whom?

I have issues with the mom failing the polygraph, because as of now I don't really buy that mom was in on it. If both she and her boyfriend had a big secret, they'd be hanging together - but Shawn Adkins appears not to be going home at this point. Then Billie was told Shawn had failed his poly before taking her own. The resulting stress of wondering what her man had done to her baby could easily cause all kinds of off-kilter readings that could look like deception where none actually exists, especially if she had suspicions but hadn't done anything about them. I'd throw that one out, give her a day or two to settle down and do another polygraph. If that one comes up bad, then Mom knows something.

It was also reported that a neighbor often seen her outside on a cell phone. Any reports on where that phone is? I guess I can't speak for all 13 year olds, but mine is a texting fool. Also, I wonder if she ever expressed to her friends anything strange about the b/f. Or maybe her older brother. The mom did say her daughter and him were rocky for a while with the adjustment of mom and dad breaking up.
I believe in the mom. A caller into NG yesterday asked why she didn't call her daughter to say goodnight while spending the night at a friends house because it's something the caller would have done and the mom was like "I wish I had called her to say goodnight" That pain in her eyes was certainly sincere to me.

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- The reporting of rumor, innuendo and misrepresentation seems to be a part – sadly – of the unfolding story surrounding missing teenager Hailey Dunn.
Despite statements to the contrary by people involved, Sparky Dean, senior trooper of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told KTXS on Friday that no one has been told whether they have passed or failed a polygraph test.
This comes despite the statement made on national television by Billie Dunn, Hailey's mother, that she and her former live-in boyfriend Shawn Adkins had both failed polygraph tests. She made this statement on live television Thursday night on HLN's "Nancy Grace."
Told of Dean's statement that no results of passing or failure were pronounced, Billie Dunn twice reasserted her position: She was told there was "deception indicated."
The misunderstanding of what did and did not occur stands as an example of the enormous challenges of news reporting in the middle of an ongoing investigation, during which assumptions and misunderstandings exist – and are sometimes reported to the public.
Furthermore, KTXS has learned over the past several days, that other family members have made various conflicting and unconfirmed claims – declaring, at different times, that at least four different people have failed the polygraph tests.
Another member of the extended family added an assertion Friday morning to KTXS News that Adkins "had been cleared" of any wrong-doing.
Such assertions, assumptions and misunderstandings seem to occur in a fluid, ongoing story that is not yet complete.
Another assertion made on the "Nancy Grace Show" Thursday night stated that the Billie Dunn's home was searched on Wednesday for the first time. Officials on Friday pointed out that the home has been searched three times since Hailey's disappearance on Dec. 27.

Experts have long known that journalistic coverage of breaking news during an active investigation is a difficult assignment. Some in the news media, in a competitive environment, will rush to release scraps of information – occasionally before the facts are confirmed.
Kenneth Pybus, media law specialist and journalism faculty member at Abilene Christian University, said part of the problem comes from the tension that exists between differing roles and responsibilities of those involved.
"One of the challenges is that you have competing interests: the sources involved, the media and the law enforcement," he said. "The media are trying to quickly put out information to the public. Law enforcement is trying to find and protect evidence, see that justice is served and, sometimes, protect privacy.
"The media often frustrate law enforcement, and law enforcement often frustrates the media," he said. "And both often frustrate the sources that are involved in the incident."
Nevertheless, he said, journalists "have a responsibility to be as accurate as possible. In the end they can only report what they've been told. Sometimes they wind up repeating false information."

SAN ANTONIO -- A 13-year-old Texas girl has been missing more than a week, and the F.B.I. has now joined the investigation into her disappearance.

Hailey Dunn was reportedly last seen leaving her home in Colorado City, Texas on Monday, December 27th. Authorities have yet to determine if Hailey was abducted, but her family says she's not the type to run away. Investigators say they are making progress and are questioning a small group of people who they believe may be involved.

JFC. I was really hoping I was right in the assumption she was a runaway. The whole "you aren't my dad. You can't tell me what to do."
To find out Adkins failed poly... I'm going to puke.
Its another Zahra Baker case, isn't it?

She really didn't have an answer....she just kinda said something like "cuz the kids used it" and blew it off. I really didn't find the Mom all that sincere....just my opinion. How would the kids or Hailey get ahold of Mom or BF if they had both their phones? That didn't make any sense to me....so that is what was making me look at her with a raised eyebrow. I hope she is found soon, but....we all know how it goes.

COLORADO CITY — Law enforcement officials continued to work through the weekend to find teenager Hailey Darlene Dunn, who was reported missing Dec. 28.

The area of focus for those searching for clues Saturday was about 15 miles north of Colorado City, near the community of Dunn. Senior Trooper Sparky Dean said the area already had been searched from the air by helicopter but law enforcement now was using a combination of officers on foot, horseback and all-terrain vehicles to take a closer look.

In what law enforcement emphasized is an unrelated incident, a 15-year-old female, who said she was in town to visit a relative, reported Saturday morning that a Hispanic male tried to force her into a vehicle. The alleged victim was found to be a runaway from Lubbock and she was arrested.

Senior Trooper Sparky Dean of the Department of Public Safety said “investigators believe this alleged event was not a part of the task force investigation” of the disappearance of Hailey Dunn.

n addition to the search in the Dunn area, Dean said officers continued a door-to-door canvass of homes in Colorado City to search for physical evidence and information regarding the girl’s disappearance. The search included garages and sheds, he said, to try to find “a Hailey that’s hiding.”

Authorities have not ruled out that Hailey ran away, and they have not found evidence of criminal activity.

“We haven’t found that smoking gun, that bloody knife,” Dean said.

Law enforcement’s goal for the weekend, he said, is to continue to chase leads. Those leads are coming in a variety of ways, he said.

A tip line set up for the missing teen said gotten an average of 30 calls per day according to City Manager Pete Kampfer, who has acted as a spokesman for the Colorado City Police Department. In addition, plainclothes officers have gathered information from residents, and land searches have turned up other information, he said

Adkins has family members who live in Dunn and although some community members want to link the search in that area to Billie Jean Dunn’s boyfriend, Dean said he could not confirm a connection.

“Everybody’s a suspect, and nobody’s a suspect,” he said.

...he still has hope of finding Hailey alive. A big obstacle, he said, are witnesses who have been deceptive in their answers.

Colorado City Police struggle with inconsistent statements, as they work to create a time line of when 13 year old Hailey Dunn went missing.

They say a new lead, from a witness who saw Hailey either Sunday December 26th, or Monday December 27th, walking on Manuel Street in Colorado City with two girls could be helpful information.

They're asking those 2 unidentified girls come forward and answer questions.

Though family says she was last seen December 27th, Sunday law officials confirmed there have been inconsistencies in the families statements as well as several others questioned.
http://www.ktxs.com/news/26419095/detail.html
Kampfer and Dean plan also to speak at the high school, he said Sunday.

The address will refer to a lead received by a witness who saw Hailey walking with two girls the afternoon of either Dec. 26 or Dec. 27. The witness who confirmed seeing Hailey, however, was unsure of who the two other girls were. They were seen walking east in the 200 block of Manuel Street in Colorado City, which is less than a quarter mile from Hailey’s home.

Speaking with the two girls seen with Hailey may lead authorities to important information about where Hailey could be.

I would love to be wrong about this one, and have that kid hiding somewhere to be with a boyfriend or just because she got pissed off at her parents.

If I was going to be with someone with a phone (my husband), I've left my cell with my daughter. So if the mother could be reached at work or whatever, I think it's beleivable. Although my daughter has her own phone - they've always been hand-me-downs so they weren't always dependable (broke often)& I'd let her borrow mine.

Investigators searching for information about the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn of Colorado City are conducting interviews with two girls who were seen with Dunn around the time she vanished.

The identities of the girls were discovered this morning after Senior Department of Public Safety Trooper Sparky Dean and Pete Kampfer, city manager for Colorado City, met with middle school students at 8 a.m. to discuss Dunn’s disappearance.
[...]

Dean said they received the names of the two girls after meeting with sixth grade students. The girls previously had been asked generic questions by investigators, and Dean said they would be questioned again to see if they might have any information about where Dunn was going or where she may be.
[...]

Dean told the students he is confident that Hailey is alive but in hiding, and he asked them to thank police officers for their work when they see them around town.

“I kind of feel like we’re playing hide and seek with no boundaries,” Dean said.

DPS Trooper Sparky Dean was quoted in other reports as saying they're confident Hailey is alive and hiding. Monday he clarified saying that while he hopes that is the case, there is no evidence that Hailey is hiding.
http://www.kcbd.com/Global/story.asp?S=13819779
On the criminal side, KTXS confirmed today DNA was collected from people close to the case. It's not clear how many people have given DNA samples, but Hailey's father, Clint Dunn, confirms he gave a sample. Reports that this investigation is being treated as only that of a run-away case are not true.

"We need to be working two angles," said City Manager Pete Kampfer, "One of them is that she's a missing person, and is alive, another part of the investigation is criminal that something has occurred where Hailey is deceased."

The person who's closest to the case, Hailey's mom, says even though her credibility is being questioned, she's focusing on getting her little girl home.

"People have said nasty things and that's okay and that's expected," Billie Jean Dunn, "I'm still thankful they're wanting Hailey's face out there. "

It was also decided today that the briefings being given by authorities on the case will now be every other day, instead of daily. They say they're scaling back because that time could better be devoted to looking for Hailey.

Two weeks and counting, there's still no sign of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn. She disappeared a few days after Christmas and one person we haven't heard much from during this whole ordeal is Hailey's father. Now he's speaking out hoping someone, somewhere, knows something about his daughter.

"I don't want the public to forget about Hailey's search because someone's got her, I don't want no one to forget that," Hailey's Father, Clint Dunn, said.

It's the first time since Hailey's disappearance Clint Dunn has addressed the media. His goal is to let everyone know that as time passes not to give up on finding his daughter.

"Were gonna keep it going, it's only going to keep getting bigger. I'm gonna make sure of that, I'm not gonna quit searching. I'm doing everything I can and make it bigger until she is found," Dunn said.

Clint says he will be as active as he can in Hailey's rescue efforts.

"I hope she is safe and scared to come out. It's not like her, she is beautiful child, I'm more scared with each night that goes by," Dunn said.

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- KTXS News has obtained documents that show startling facts into the investigation of missing 13-year-old Hailey Dunn that point to Hailey's mother Billie Jean Dunn and her former live-in boyfriend Shawn Adkins as being primary suspects.Through the Freedom of Information Act, KTXS has received copies of affidavits that were filed by law enforcement officials for the purpose of securing search warrants to search for and seize evidence related to Hailey’s disappearance.

from the same article:

– Adkins previously had threatened the lives of both Hailey Dunn and Billie Dunn in February 2010.
– Both Adkins and Billie Dunn apparently held an ongoing, intense fascination with horrific films and brutal crimes. Seized in a box in their bedroom were numerous documents, some fictional and some past crimes, that covered such topics such as serial killers, ax murders, sexual sadistic activities, the occult, sex and death topics, motives for murder and mass murderers – including the killing of family members.
– Billie Dunn and Adkins hosted a number of friends for a New Year’s Eve party at their home – just three days after Billie Dunn reported Hailey missing. Adkins downplayed the party, stating they just had a few friends over to the house to have drinks on New Year’s Eve.
– Billie Dunn volunteered to take a polygraph examination, but when she arrived, she was found to be “under the influence of narcotics,â€￾ and she was dismissed from the test at that time. On her second attempt, the investigators concluded there was “deception indicated.â€￾ After the examination, Billie Dunn was given the chance to discuss and explain “why she failed the examination.â€￾ Officials said she couldn't explain them, and she ended the interview by walking out.
– Adkins twice refused to take polygraph examinations. Then he agreed to a polygraph, but after providing some inconsistent information, he ended this polygraph by walking out. Officials said he failed the polygraph, particularly concerning the whereabouts of Hailey.
– During his polygraph examination, before walking out, Adkins provided some positive reaction about knowing where Hailey Dunn is. Indications were that Hailey may be in Scurry County.
– Adkins and Billie Dunn made two withdrawals of cash from an ATM machine in Snyder, in Scurry County, at about 6:20 p.m. on Dec. 27 totaling $140. They told investigators the money was for purchasing drugs.
– Numerous statements made by both Adkins and Billie Dunn, particularly Adkins, have been inconsistent, some with initial denials, then admissions, then changed statements.

Sounds like a homicide to me.

I'll be damned.
Like O'Mall (heya!!) I was leaning towards mom failing the poly because sure, they may have watched or discussed disturbing stuff. Now that it's clear she was on drugs when she went in and THAT THEY THREW A NEW YEARS PARTY 3 DAYS AFTER SHE WENT MISSING I do believe we can all toss that 'benefit of the doubt' shit out the window.

That poor little girl is dead.

She sure had me fooled; I felt sorry for her when I watched the Velez-Mitchell interview, or maybe I'm just gullible. I don't know that their "fascination with horrible crimes" is worth anything; God knows what cops would think if they saw my library. But having friends over for drinks New Years Eve? There is something very, very wrong here.

Holy shit. The mother, really? I wouldn't have thought that. I was leaning towards the boyfriend.

I dunno, dude. I still think it was the boyfriend, but I think Mom is a drug-addled douchecanoe who knew something was going on. Billie was at work the day Hailey went missing - but it is quite possible that she went to work as a cover while Shawn got rid of the evidence, which is why they needed to go get high later that evening.

Guess: Shawn liked Hailey better than he liked Mama. Hailey got a little power to go with her trauma and got resistant and angry and possibly threatened to tell. Shawn lost his temper. Billie helped him cover it up out of guilt. But I don't think Billie's ever been a wonderful parent, so it's entirely possible she was in on it.

I have to admit I laughed at the part of the affidavit summary where they were all "oh, they had BOOKS about SERIAL KILLERS and SEX and DEATH and COLD CASES OMG" because I have tons of that shit lying around my house. But then, my kids aren't missing or dead, so.
