OLD Mugshot

he man accused of killing six people in a mass shooting appeared before a judge Friday morning and collapsed in court while hearing the chilling evidence against him.

Ronald Lee Haskell, 33, was brought into the courtroom with his hands and feet cuffed and wearing a jailed issued orange jumpsuit. This was his first appearance before a judge where he heard the capital murder charge and the evidence against him.

[...]

As the prosecutor read the calculated details in the probable cause documents, Haskell's knees started to buckle and he collapsed to the floor. Deputies helped to keep him standing, but he collapsed again. Haskell was then placed in a chair and rolled out of the courtroom.

"Maybe reality is finally setting in. This is not TV this is not fiction. He is facing his consequence," said Assistant District Attorney Tammy Thomas.

Haskell's public defender says he is a troubled individual who was off his medication.

"The focus of my defense with Mr. Haskell is his mental condition. Our laws say a person suffering from mental illness is not criminally responsible," said his attorney Doug Durham.

He says Haskell is being treated with a cocktail of medications in jail. Durham also says he's consulting with mental health experts on how to proceed with the case.

[...]

Cassidy, 15, told Haskell she would take his number and have her parents call when they returned. She says she went to get a pen and Haskell followed her in the house, saying, "I know your parents."

[...]

Katie Stay, who is the sister of Haskell's ex-wife, her husband Stephen Stay, and four of their children -- Rebecca, 6; Emily, 9; Bryan, 13, and 4-year-old Zachary Stay -- were all killed.

[...]

Cassidy's suffered a skull fracture and lost a finger when she held her hand up during the shooting. Investigators say her hand deflected the bullet just enough to change the trajectory and save not only her life, but the lives of her grandparents and Haskell's ex-wife and children.

He should have been in jail! HE BEAT UP HIS OWN MOTHER, and he was still free???

A week before Ron Haskell allegedly killed four children and two adults in a Texas rampage he taped his mother to a chair, choked her and threatened to kill her for speaking to his ex-wife, according to police records obtained by ABC News.

[...]

Haskell's mother, Karla Jeanne Haskell, told police in San Marcos Calif., on July 3 that she wanted a restraining order against her son after a ferocious argument that began when she told him that she was in contact with his ex-wife, court documents state.

[....]

"He yelled at me and twice placed his hands around my neck trying to choke me and caused me to pass out," Karla Haskell, 61, said, according to the court documents. "He told me he was going to kill me, my family and any officer who stops him. He hid my telephones. I was taped up for four hours."

There is no record of Haskell being arrested for the alleged assault on his mother.

Police reports in Utah indicate that Haskell's ex-wife was also the victim of violence. Ron Haskell was charged with domestic assault on June 5, 2008 after his wife called the police saying that he had dragged her out of their bedroom by her hair and repeatedly punched her in the head.

The Logan City Police Department report states that she then decided to go and sleep in their children's bedroom, but he followed her in there and pulled her out of the room by her hair once more, continuing to punch her in the head.

Police booked him on domestic assault and domestic violence in the presence of a child because the couple's children, aged 3 and 5 at the time, were present. He made bail and was released five hours later. It's not clear how the charged was adjudicated.

[...]
The final issue that the Logan City Police Department was involved in was a protection order violation. His wife had been awarded a protection order in July 2013 and on Oct. 8, 2013, she called in a protection order violation because he had showed up at one of their childrens' schools.

The wife filed for divorce months later - on Valentine's Day.

I haven't been able to find any information regarding the weapon used, and who owned it, or if it was legal.

My opinion (assuming his weapon was his and was legally owned) -
Disclaimer: I'm glad that the citizens of the US are allowed to have/carry guns. I don't want to live in a country where only the police are able to possess weapons.
However, in a situation where a person has multiple domestic violence situations, a restraining order, and was even instructed BY COURT to undergo psychiatric evaluation to care for his kids, I feel like this is where local authorities/government needs to intervene and research for past gun permits/purchases and require forfeiture of all known guns.
Sorry, but when you're a very clear and recognized issue in regards to violence, anger management, and imbalance, you have no right to own a lethal weapon.
This is where "gun control" needs to happen. Any argument to this basically mocks the fact that this entire innocent family/children were executed, because nothing was done about this guys issues.

What an incredibly brave (because for all she knew, he could come back and make sure he finished them all) and strong (for surviving it all) girl. She is a hero, and I hope with all hope that she finds a way to find peace - given the time and the counselling. She may have felt alone at that moment her family was killed and she survived, but she found a way to protect those she loves - and now she is surrounded by the love and admiration on millions of people around the world. She's certainly not alone. I hope her body and her mind both make a full recovery.

Lone survivor of deadly attack on Spring family released from hospital

Cassidy Stay
Cassidy Stay, the lone survivor of a cold-blooded attack on a family in Spring, has been released from the hospital.
[...]
the 15-year-old was discharged earlier Friday in good condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

"As a hospital team, we were honored to be able to help care for this brave young woman at her critical time of need. The entire staff at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital has been profoundly touched by Cassidy's resilient spirit, inner strength, and hopeful heart during this time of indescribable shock and grief," the hospital said in a prepared statement. "We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to her, and her extended family, as they begin the difficult healing process. The family asks that media please continue to respect their privacy until further notice. They also would like to thank the community, both here in Houston and all over the country, for the outpouring of love and support they have received these past several days."

Cassidy is one of the seven family members shot execution-style inside their Spring home Wednesday evening. Both her parents and all her siblings, ages 4 to 13, died in the attack.
[...]
Investigators say he tied up Cassidy then waited for the rest of the family to return home. When they arrived, each one was tied up and forced to lie face-down. He allegedly asked each family member where his ex-wife was, and when they said they didn't know, each one was shot in the back of the head.

Investigators say Cassidy Stay saved her own life by deflecting the bullet with her hand. She reportedly lost a finger in the process, but it changed the trajectory of the bullet just enough so that it didn't do greater damage to her head.

Detectives also credit the 15-year-old for saving her grandparents' life. According to investigators, she called 911, reported the shootings and told them Haskell allegedly was on his way to her grandparents' home to kill them.

I really wish that she gets immediate therapy and realizes that there is nothing she could have done to prevent it.

Thank you. I have no problem with regular people having guns, but I would like law enforcement to be able to take guns away from such obviously messed-up people before they hurt someone. I realize this won't stop all or even most of them, but at least if someone confiscates your gun you'll have to take one from another armed person who may kill you before you can get it.

When you've tied up and beaten your own mother just for speaking to your ex, I think you've shown pretty clearly that you do not possess the decision-making skills necessary to own a deadly weapon.

But yes, this is just speculation until we find out where the gun came from.

The fact remains we still don't take domestic violence seriously in this country in many cases until it leads to something like this.
There was no excuse for this man to be out on the streets to do this.. NONE.
And yet he was, to do this.
And the sad thing is, this will happen again and again until we tackle the issue head on, something we simply won't do in many parts of the country.

The problem is worse in small towns where everyone knows everyone. This guy beat his own mom and was free to cross state lines and murder.

I suspect a lot of the reason we don't take DV seriously is that a lot of people see it as solely a "women's issue" and thus dismiss it, and then rationalize that dismissal as, "Well, she should just leave." as if that's all it takes to escape, never mind all the numerous examples of leaving leading to worse reprisals from the abuser. Or they simply see women as lesser citizens, and so don't care what happens to them.

She did what she was supposed to but for some reason the police department thought he was kidding. He beat his mom and they still thought he was kidding.

That whole police force needs to be retrained.

A forensic psychiatrist told jurors Monday that a man accused of fatally shooting six members of his ex-wife’s family near Houston in 2014 wasn’t responsible for his actions because of severe mental illness that made him believe voices in his head telling him to carry out the killings.

Prosecutors allege Ronald Lee Haskell, 39, created a meticulous plot in which he traveled from California to suburban Houston in 2014 and stalked his ex-wife’s family for two days before killing six of them, including four children. One family member, a then 15-year-old girl, was also shot but survived by playing dead.

But Stephen Raffle, a forensic psychiatrist who examined Haskell and reviewed his medical records, testified at his capital murder trial that Haskell didn’t know what he was did was wrong.

Raffle said that at the time of the killings, Haskell was suffering from a form of bipolar disorder, a brain condition that causes unusual shifts in mood, and from schizoaffective disorder, a condition characterized by hallucinations or delusions.

The voices in Haskell’s head “had basically taken control” of him, Raffle said.

Haskell’s marriage had ended after years of domestic violence, according to court records. His ex-wife and his children had moved from Utah to Texas to be with her family.

Prosecutors allege Haskell became so enraged his ex-wife had left him that he planned to harm anyone who had helped her.

During her questioning of Raffle, prosecutor Lauren Bard portrayed Haskell as someone who was faking being mentally ill and who killed the six family members out of rage and narcissism.

Killed in the shooting were 39-year-old Stephen Stay and his 34-year-old wife Katie, along with their children: 4-year-old Zach; 7-year-old Rebecca; 9-year-old Emily; and 13-year-old Bryan. Katie Stay was the sister of Haskell’s ex-wife.

At the start of the trial, Cassidy Stay, the only person to survive the shooting testified she begged Haskell to not hurt her, her parents or four siblings. She told jurors Haskell had her and her family lie face down on her living room floor before shooting each person one by one.

After the shooting at the Stays’ home, Haskell tried going to the houses of his ex-wife’s parents and brother before officers took him into custody after a long standoff.

A Houston jury convicted a man of killing six members of his ex-wife's family Thursday, rejecting his insanity defense.

Attorneys for Ronald Lee Haskell argued that he had heard voices in his head telling him to kill members of the Stay family in 2014. Prosecutors said Haskell, 39, had planned to kill anyone who helped his ex-wife Melannie Lyon after she left him.

Authorities say Haskell traveled from California and stalked Lyon's family for two days before committing the murders.

Those killed include Stephen Stay, 39, and his 34-year-old wife Katie, along with their children, Zach, 4, Rebecca, 7, Emily, 9, and 13-year-old Bryan. Katie Stay was Melanie Lyon's sister.

Jurors deliberated for eight hours over two days before coming to a verdict. The trial's penalty phase is scheduled to begin Monday. Prosecutors are asking for the death penalty.

Jury wants vengeance... :)

Man sentenced to death for murdering 6 members of his ex-wife’s family

HOUSTON — A man who prosecutors say was driven by vengeance when he fatally shot six members of his ex-wife’s family in Texas, including four children, was on Friday sentenced to death.

Jurors sentenced Ronald Lee Haskell after deliberating for little more than four hours. The jury had to choose between life in prison without parole or a death sentence.

The same jury last month convicted Haskell of capital murder in the 2014 killings of Stephen and Katie Stay at their home in suburban Houston. The jury rejected his attorneys’ efforts to have him found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Haskell killed the couple and four of their children in the living room of their suburban Houston home in 2014. A fifth child, 15-year-old Cassidy Stay, was shot in the head but she survived by playing dead.
