Police are investigating after a 5-year-old girl was found dead inside a closet in Northwest Houston.

The call was made at 3 p.m. at Quail Creek Apartment after the child's grandmother made the discovery, police said.

"It's very troubling no matter how the child died whether it was accidental or intentional death for a body to be in a closet for several days it's just pretty unthinkable," said Lt. Larry Crowson.

Family members were visiting the child's home and during the visit, discovered the child dead in the closet, police said.

"The information we have right now is that the body appears to have been deceased for several days," said Crowson.

HPD's dispatch told KPRC that the child suffered chemical burns but investigators on the scene could not confirm that information.

"That's one of the things we heard, we just don't know at this point until we get the autopsy," Crowson said.

Police said it was unclear whether the child's death was accidental or intentional.

The mother was taken in for questioning. No arrests have been made.

Homicide is investigating the scene. The child's autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, according to the medical examiner.

"On Tuesday, 27-year-old Priscilla Nicole Torres was arrested in connection to the child's death, according to Houston police. Torres faces a felony charge of tampering with evidence, a human corpse.

Additional charges are possible, HPD added.

ABC13 also learned Torres' live-in boyfriend was interviewed by police, but he is not in custody and has not been charged.

Police said the body of 5-year-old Sierra Patino was hidden in the closet for nearly a week.

Officers were called around 2:30 p.m. Monday to the Quail Creek apartment complex at 7835 Grow Lane in northwest Houston.

Police say family members came to the apartment earlier Monday to check on the 5-year-old girl, who hadn't been seen for some time.

When the visitors asked about a foul smell inside the apartment, the mother confessed the source of the odor was Sierra's body, according to police.

Officers said she claimed the child had died from ingesting chemicals on Aug. 27. Sierra's body had been kept in the closet ever since.

Firefighters who found the girl's body covered it from view, describing it as being in a state of decay, according to police.

Investigators are now trying to see whether Sierra's death is consistent with the mother's statement to police.

An autopsy will determine whether her death was accidental or intentional, and is expected to shed light on what chemical she may have ingested.

On Tuesday, the girl's family said Sierra is originally from Jacinto City and attended Jacinto City Elementary School. She and her mother moved in with the mom's boyfriend on Aug. 23."

A Houston mother faced a judge Tuesday night after police say she confessed to hiding her 5-year-old's body inside an apartment closet. The girl allegedly died from ingesting chemicals.

Essentially, the mother said she was scared, according to police, too scared to call 911 after her daughter died. Officers say she feared CPS involvement.

Detectives say 27-year-old Priscilla Nicole Torres wrapped her 5-year-old daughter, Sierra Patino, in a blanket and put her in a closet.

But what happened before that and how she died is where things get confusing. Detectives say she told inconsistent stories.

It was Sierra's grandparents who showed up to their daughter's boyfriend's home Monday, concerned about their granddaughter, who they had not seen.

What they walked into was the foul odor of a decaying body. They called 911.

"They went into the apartment and found a 5-year-old child who was deceased and wrapped up in blankets in the closet."

The stories detectives say Torres told them were fluid, one changing after the other.

Police say Torres, at one point, told them her daughter suffered for days with stomach complications, but didn't call for help because she feared CPS involvement.

Detectives say her first story to them, however, detailed an accident with chemicals: a bottle of toilet cleaner fell in the bathtub where she was giving her daughter a bath. She claimed her daughter's face started peeling, and she died the next day.

Her next story, something along the same lines according to investigators, but she went back on her word that she was bathing Sierra. Instead, it was her boyfriend.

"Her boyfriend offered to give the child a bath while the defendant made dinner," she allegedly told police. "The door was closed and upon opening the door, she observed her boyfriend with the daughter, in which she already... she said daughter was exhibiting chemical burns to her extremities, also some redness and bruises to forehead."

Torres, according to detectives, ultimately stated that she wrapped her daughter in the blanket and put her in the closet, where she stayed for six days.

Closet Corpses.
It's the sensation that's sweeping a nation.
Skeletons in your closet was so 80s anyway.
Post automatically merged:

"Chemicals" could be meth or other drugs. Yeah, shove her in a closet and it will all go away. Fucking ostrich.
Something tells me most of her life has been sitting back and letting things sort themselves out. Effort just doesn't seem to be her preferred lifestyle choice.

The boyfriend of the mother of a 5-year-old girl whose body was found in a Houston apartment closet is expected to be charged with evidence tampering related to a human corpse, prosecutors said Thursday.

Police were investigating Santiago Esparza, the boyfriend of Priscilla Torres; she has been jailed pending $50,000 bond over her alleged role in the death of her daughter.

Santiago Esparza Jr., 30, appeared before a judge Saturday after he was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence -- namely a human corpse.

Prosecutors asked for no bond because he is a habitual offender.

According to prosecutors, Esparza has multiple prior convictions, including convictions for possession of a prohibited item in a correctional facility from 2014 and injury to a child from 2011.

Ezparza's attorney pointed out that to be a true habitual, he would have had to complete his sentence and commit a crime multiple times. Since his 2014 conviction happened while he was in prison, he does not meet the qualifications to be a habitual offender.

In light of that, prosecutors decided to change their stance and ask for a $100,000 bond, which the judge granted due to his extensive, violent criminal history.

According to court documents, Esparza has lived in Houston his entire life and he has three children ages 5, 9 and 11.

Prosecutors said Torres may have lied in her initial statement because she feared retaliation from Esparza given his past.

According to court records, Torres initially told police she was giving her daughter a bath and she left the child alone for a few minutes and when she returned, there was an empty bottle of toilet bowl cleaner floating next to the child.

Court documents revealed that, after more questioning, Torres changed her story and said her boyfriend had given the child a bath while she made dinner.

"Torres stated that on Aug 23rd that it was the Defendant (Esparza) who was giving the Complainant (Sierra) a bath while she was cooking macaroni. Torres would go on to state the door was shut and the Defendant refused to open it," explained the court documents. "Torres states that she opened the door and observed the Defendant with the Complainant in the tub, exhibiting what appeared to be burns and a possible bruise on her forehead. Torres states that these injuries were not present on the Complainant before being placed in the bath tub."

The court document goes on to say that the mother told investigators that Esparza denied any wrongdoing and said, "It was an accident."

Four days later, the little girl continued to show signs of illness, wasn't eating and was throwing up and losing consciousness, according to the court documents.

The mother told the detective that she and Esparza decided to give the child a shower Aug. 27 because she was losing consciousness. They then put her on the bed and "began doing chest compressions with one hand, while simultaneously, performing rescue breathing while holding the Complainants nose shut during this process," explained the court documents.

Torres told investigators that after a minute, the child died. She put the child's body in a green romper and accused Esparza of removing the child from the bed and placing her in the closet.

They stayed in the apartment for three days, until Aug. 30, while the 5-year-old's body was inside the closet.

The little girl's mother told authorities that on Aug. 30, her boyfriend locked the front door and applied an interior chain lock, then exited the back patio through a sliding door.

Authorities said surveillance video confirmed that and that at about 6:50 a.m. on that day, the couple was seen jumping over the patio wall.

An investigator stated Esparza picked up a paycheck and that for the next three days, the couple stayed at a hotel in Jacinto City and visited Galveston.

Torres told authorities that on Sept. 2., she "insisted that the Defendant drive her back to the location of her dead child. Torres said that later that day, she called 911."

At a hearing Thursday, prosecutors revealed they planned to charge Esparza in connection with the case.

"We believe he was in the apartment with Priscilla Torres and that they acted together," prosecutors said. "(They) put the body in the closet and then left the scene for multiple days before Priscilla Torres reported this to police."

Torres is being held in jail on $50,000 bail. Her attorney said he believes a jury will find her not guilty in the death of her daughter.

"Four days later, the little girl continued to show signs of illness, wasn't eating and was throwing up and losing consciousness,..."

Four days later? They did nothing to provide medical care to this poor child for four fucking days? He intentionally injured the child, and she covered for him. Toss them both in a vat of acid!

I don't know of any household cleaner that would burn your skin off immediately. Especially if it was diluted with a bath full of water. The only way it would burn you like that is if was put straight on and left on. Maybe that's why the bath happened, they chemically burned the kid and tried to bathe her too late. Whatever they did, I feel like it was scary bad.

A day after his initial court appearance, Santiago Esparza opened up from inside the Harris County Jail directly attacking his girlfriend, Sierra's mother, Priscilla Torres.

"She's a God damn liar," said Esparza during our jailhouse interview Sunday.

Prosecutors say Torres and Esparza stayed three days in the apartment while 5-year-old Sierra's dead body lay in a bedroom closet.

According to court documents, Torres told detectives that Esparza gave her daughter a bath while she cooked dinner. She says the door to the bathroom was closed and Esparza refused to open it.

"Why would I give that girl a bath? said Esparza. "I didn't give that girl a bath. Would you let me give your daughter a bath? No, right? Then why would I give her daughter a bath?"

When Esparza was asked why his girlfriend would accuse him of this, he responded, "I don't know. She's obsessed with me."
