Captain Jason Haase said 25-year-old Alicen Cote Perez was arrested Saturday for one count of felony child abuse.
Haase said a 4-month-old was checked into the emergency room for seizures, and while the baby was being treated, doctors located amphetamines in the child’s system during a routine test.
The baby was admitted to the intensive care unit for treatment.
Through the investigation, police learned that Grand Island police were notified for a welfare check Friday on Alicen’s 1-year-old child, but were unable to make contact with Alicen.
Hastings police said she had left the hospital after the 4-month-old was admitted to the ICU, taking her other child to exchange the child with the biological father.
A detective with Hastings police took over the investigation Saturday morning.
The doctor at Mary Lanning Healthcare told police that there was nothing medically that could have caused amphetamines in the baby’s system. The doctor added that there is potential for serious bodily injury because of the damage it could do to a person so young.
Police said Cote Perez returned to the hospital on Saturday, where detectives conducted an interview with her and subsequently arrested her.
Hastings police said they had no concern for the 1-year-old, who was now in his father’s custody in Omaha. The father told police he would get his child checked out after hearing the situation with the baby.
