Israeli police are investigating claims that a 16-year-old girl was gang-raped by 30 men in the coastal resort of Eilat.

Two men have been arrested so far over allegations that the girl was repeatedly assaulted while she was drunk in a hotel room, before she went to police last Friday.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the alleged gang-rape was 'not just a crime against the girl... it a crime against humanity'.

Some of the men are alleged to have filmed the attacks on their phones, according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

The first suspect was reportedly arrested after messages emerged showing that there was video footage of the alleged rape.

Police say the girl was not a guest at the hotel, but had gone to the bathroom after drinking there with some of her friends.

She was then allegedly taken to one of the hotel rooms and raped by the group of men, who did not all know each other.

I worked for the city council of the municipality of Eilat, Israel some time ago, and it is a considered a resort town.
It is filled with drunken Israeli young men (18-22) exhibiting behavior much like our "Spring Breakers" do, Jordanian day-workers strictly in the Hotel industry, and illegal Egyptian-Jewish immigrants. It is not a place to let your guard down in.
Here is an interesting (and alarming) article about the rise of sexual assault in Israel from the NY Times.

Teen who reported gang rape by 30 men in Israel now under police guard
The teenager who says she was gang-raped by 30 men in Israel was under police guard Friday amid a barrage of online threats — as the owner of the hotel where the girl said the crime happened claimed there’s no proof that it occurred there, according to reports.

The 16-year-old girl sparked protests across Israel after reporting that men had lined up to be filmed having sex with her in what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called “a crime against humanity.”

As well as thousands of supporters taking to the streets waving banners supporting the girl, she faced a “violent online discourse” directed at her, law enforcement officials told the Times of Israel.

After the teen’s social media profiles were leaked online, her advisers asked authorities to move her to a safe location amid fears that the accused attackers or their families might try to harm her, the Jerusalem Post said.

While it was not immediately clear if that would happen, police increased security around her home because of the threats, the reports said.

Seven more suspects arrested in alleged gang rape of teen girl in Israel
Israeli police have arrested seven more suspects – all of them minors – in the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old girl in the Red Sea resort town of Eilat – as thousands took to the streets to protest government policies on sexual violence, according to reports.

Eleven people have so far been detained in last week’s incident, which has outraged the nation and drawn disgust from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called it “a crime against humanity,” The Times of Israel reported.

The first two suspects arrested are in their late 20s and from northern Israel. On Saturday, two 17-year-old boys from southern Israel were arrested, according to local reports. Seven additional suspects were arrested Sunday.

Meanwhile, the manager of the hotel where the alleged rape took place also was arrested Sunday on suspicion of failing to prevent a crime and interfering in a police probe, the news outlet reported.

A senior police official said investigators have evidence that strengthens the victim’s claims.

“This whole case is based on her testimony and this testimony is supported, among other things, by the findings we have collected so far,” he told Channel 12, according to The Times of Israel.

“This is a shocking rape that went on for long hours,” he said, adding that investigators have sensitive material they are not willing to disclose yet.
