A Portland man was arrested Wednesday after authorities say he admitted to raping his fiancée’s dog, which later was euthanized after the sexual assault caused internal injuries.

Fidel Lopez, 51, told Portland police that he and the dog, a Lhasa Apso mix named Estrella, were lying in bed last November while his girlfriend was out, and he got upset when she wouldn’t respond to his calls and texts, according to a probable cause affidavit. Lopez said he’d been drinking alcohol at the time and “out of anger” sexually assaulted the dog, the affidavit said.

Lopez told police Estrella “seemed fine at the time,” the court documents said.

According to the affidavit, the girlfriend later brought the dog to DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital after she heard Estrella whining while hiding under the couch and discovered blood and injuries to the animal. She told staff that her fiancé “displayed some potential bestiality tendencies,” mentioning that he showed his genitals to dogs and bragged about watching another person sexually assault a dog.

The girlfriend said Lopez had asked her if she’d consider getting a dog bigger than Estrella, the affidavit said.

A necropsy was performed on Estrella after she was euthanized. Traces of Lopez’s DNA were found in the dog, the affidavit said.

Me and my dog would have been down the road after the first hint.

A judge sentenced an Oregon man to 60 days in jail for sexually assaulting a small dog whose injuries were so severe that she had to be euthanized, prosecutors announced Monday.

In sentencing 52-year-old Fidel Lopez, Judge Angel Lopez told the defendant he would have imposed a tougher penalty if the law allowed it.

“If it could have been more, I would have gladly given you more,” the judge said in court,

Fidel Lopez pleaded guilty to a count each of aggravated animal abuse in the first degree and sexually assaulting an animal.

In entering the plea, Lopez “admitted that he unlawfully and intentionally tortured ‘Estrella,’ a Lhasa Apso mix, and that for the purpose of arousing his sexual desires, he sexually assaulted Estrella,” the release stated.

Lopez was arrested on Feb. 13 following an investigation that began late last year when the dog’s owner took her to an animal hospital amid concerns the pup had been sexually abused, according to officials.

Veterinarians determined Estrella had been sexually assaulted. The dog had to be euthanized because of “extensive internal injuries,” prosecutors said.

Forensic evidence confirmed Lopez abused the canine, the release stated.

As part of the sentence, Lopez will not be allowed to have a dog for 15 years, the DA’s office said.

He also cannot contact Estrella’s owner without permission from the probation department, and he must undergo treatment for people who abuse animals, among other penalties.

The owner of the dog needs to have her head examined if she is still with this piece of shit.

Petition for animal abuse law upgrade in Oregon.

[....]
When this case broke, over 32,000 people signed LFT’s petition calling for justice. But justice has not been served, and we must keep speaking out for Estrella.

Estrella’s attacker, Fidel Lopez, is already out of jail. He will be able to own a dog again in his lifetime. His meager sentence — which includes three years of probation, mental evaluation and counseling — sends a message that anyone can hurt or kill an innocent animal and get away almost scot-free. While counseling is indeed crucial, allowing this man to walk the streets puts both animal and human lives in danger.

“The torture and abuse that Estrella suffered is unimaginable,” Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Nicole Jergovic said in a news release.

And what is to deter Estrella’s rapist from striking again?

Sign this petition urging Oregon Governor Kate Brown to make it a top priority to pass stronger animal protection laws, so judges can hand out appropriate sentences and animal torturers are held accountable for their crimes.
