A man in Taiwan has been jailed for breaking his four-month-old baby's arms and legs because he was fed up with him crying all the time.

The 23-year-old man, identified only by his surname Wei, left the child with horrific injuries after attacking him on eight occasions between February and May 2017, according to Taiwan media.

The father was sentenced to four years and two months in prison at the Miaoli district court while his 22-year-old wife, surnamed Chen, received a four-month prison sentence suspended for two years for covering up his crimes.

The baby was only brought to hospital in May 2017 by his mother after an especially severe beating left him bleeding from a wound on his left knee, according to Central News Agency on Saturday.

Doctors were shocked to discover the baby covered in old bruises and injuries, and an x-ray confirmed the baby suffered from at least five fractures in his arms and legs.

Suspecting that the child had been physically abused, hospital staff reported the couple

Prosecutors said the mother provided a series of excuses for the injuries and denied that her husband, who worked as a blacksmith, had abused the child. She had also lied and said that a babysitter had caused the injuries.

The man, while serving another jail sentence, finally admitted to police in December 2017 that he attacked the child on eight occasions because the baby wouldn't stop crying, the report said. Police in Miaoli charged the couple in March 2018.

A judge at the Miaoli district court showed leniency after the couple expressed remorse, the report said. It is unclear whether the child will be left with permanent damage to his limbs. The child is in foster care.
