Sentenced: Father "engaged in a pattern & practice of assault & torture" on his 16mo son

A Hillsboro man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of murder, assault and strangulation nearly a year after police say he allegedly killed his 16-month-old son.

Eric Alexander Valencia, 22, was arrested on charges of aggravated murder, two counts of murder, strangulation, two counts of third-degree assault, and two counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment.

Police say his toddler son, Colin James Valencia, died Oct. 28, 2017.

According to an indictment filed on Friday, Valencia is accused of "engaging in a pattern and practice of assault and torture" of his young son.

The court document accuses Valencia of other abusive behavior leading up to Colin's death, including suffocating the boy when he was a month old and biting him, "causing physical injury."

The ground should've opened up and he should've been dragged to hell just for saying that with a straight face. I hope he gets the sentence he so richly deserves.

Eric Valencia has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2017 killing of his 16-month-old son.

The baby boy was found unresponsive in his crib on Oct. 28, 2017 when family members called 911. However, emergency responders were unable to revive the child.

An investigation was opened, but the autopsy found that the child died of “an undetermined natural cause.” The boy’s parents had told authorities that the child was healthy before his death.

Six months later, Valencia’s therapist called the Oregon Child Abuse Hotline to report that he had admitted to multiple instances of child abuse during a counseling session. According to the WCDA, Valencia told his therapist he intentionally suffocated the child on several occasions, including on the night the child died. This testimony renewed the investigation, and more people told police they had witnessed Valencia abuse the boy, as well as pets.
