A former high school athletic trainer in Montana accused of sexually assaulting up to 100 boys during a nearly 30-year span has been arrested on multiple counts of child pornography possession, authorities said.
A criminal probe into allegations against James Eric Jensen, of Miles City, began in September after Custer County Attorney Wyatt Glade learned of allegations contained in a civil lawsuit claiming that the 78-year-old former trainer at Custer County District High School had groomed and sexually assaulted up to 100 male students, prompting an admission of guilt from Jensen after at least 18 victims were identified.
“I did masturbate some of the boys,” Jensen told the Billings Gazette after the lawsuit was filed. “And I’m sorry for that. But, the lawsuit said there was also oral sex and anal probing, and that isn’t true.”
Attorney Daniel Rice, who filed the lawsuit along with two others, said Jensen’s conduct during his 28 years in the district was a “structured, sophisticated system of ritual sexual abuse” in which he promised to increase the physical prowess of the teen athletes as young as 14 with a training regimen that he dubbed “The Program” and included routine clinical exams that escalated to massages to oral sex and digital anal penetration, according to the lawsuit.
But authorities determined the alleged incidents of abuse occurred outside the statute of limitations after an investigation by Miles City police and Custer County Sheriff Tony Harbaugh. During that investigation, however, law enforcement officials uncovered information that Jensen had images of child pornography in his possession, Glade announced Thursday.
Jensen was later taken into custody on 10 counts of possession of child pornography after a number of images depicting minors were found during a search of his home and several data storage devices.
“I appreciate the patience of the community and the media throughout this process,” Glade said in a statement. “As with all criminal investigations, prosecutors and law enforcement officers are extremely limited as to what information they can release to the public before the investigation is complete. Now that the investigation has concluded and I have charged Mr. Jensen, I want to assure citizens of Custer County that I will prosecute the case with the utmost diligence and do all within my power to hold Mr. Jensen accountable.”
The images were discovered after a housekeeper at a retirement community in Miles City where Jensen lived told police she saw images of nude boys on his computer while working at the facility between 2014 and 2016, court documents indicate.
