A man who stalked a woman through the streets before knocking her unconscious and raping her in her front yard is expected to spend 25 years behind bars.
Ever L Martinez-Reyes, 24, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, followed a 36-year-old woman through Freeport in Nassau County on September 28, before attacking and raping her.
'He followed her until he felt comfortable enough to assault her,' Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said during a news conference.
'When he assaulted her and knocked her out, he then proceeded to rape her. She woke up and he knocked her out again and viciously continued to assault her.'
Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said the attack was 'one of the most brutal rapes I've ever seen'.
Martinez-Reyes was caught on surveillance tape, and after images of him were shared online and to media, police received a tip as to his whereabouts.
The 24-year-old first came to America illegally in 2010 aged just 16. He crossed the border illegally again in 2014, and was preparing to head back to his home country just before police caught up with him.
'A tip came in that the individual was ready to flee and go back to El Salvador,' Ryder said.
Since crossing the border in 2014, Martinez-Reyes had been working as a day laborer.
He was arrested on Friday and charged with two counts of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree assault.
The maximum sentence for Martinez-Reyes' charges is 25 years jail.
'If you are a sexual predator in Nassau County, get some therapy or get out of Nassau County,' Laura Curran, Nassau County Executive said.
'If you prey on our vulnerable people here, we will find you, we will arrest you and prosecute you.'
The woman, who has not been identified, is in hospital recovering from internal injuries.
