Andrew Dicken, who said he had only had one pint of lager, left regulars at the Bulls Head Hotel in Sale terrified after swinging the potentially-lethal tool ‘indiscriminately’ around the bar. People screamed in horror as the 37-year-old stalked the pub with the whirring petrol-powered saw.

Horrified customers were heard yelling: ‘He’s got a chainsaw.’ Jailing Dicken, a judge said it was a ‘miracle’ nobody was hurt. Following the incident, Dicken drunk into the early hours, went to his ex-girlfriend’s house, smashed her car windscreen and threatened to blow her house up while her children were inside. The thug was jailed for two years having earlier admitted affray; threatening a person in a public place with an offensive weapon; criminal damage; and sending a threatening message. Minshull Street Crown Court heard Dicken had been drinking at the Cross Street pub with a friend on the evening of February 9.

He was said to have been involved in a row with a group of men, before being ‘assaulted’ in the car park, the court heard. Construction worker Dicken then walked to his car, opened the boot and grabbed the tool from his stash of tools. He revved the circular Stihl saw before running back into the pub. Dicken was filmed walking up a small flight of stairs to a seating area before approaching those inside the pub. The saw can be heard over people’s screams. A man jumped out of the way as Dicken appeared to place the saw down on a table full of glasses. He was then rugby tackled and the saw was snatched away but when police arrived, at around 12.45am, he had fled. Dicken, of Chapel Road, Sale, had already amassed 38 convictions and was in breach of a suspended sentence imposed for burglary.
