KINGSPORT — A Kingsport man charged Saturday with attempted murder allegedly fired a gunshot at a neighbor’s face to prove “he would drink his beer anywhere he liked,†police said.
Kingsport police were dispatched to 1701 Jennifer St., Saturday around 8:45 p.m., where the resident, Mike Johnson, told police that his neighbor Roger Lynn Ward, 56, 1712 McGhee St., had fired a shot at him.
The investigation reportedly revealed that the incident occurred after Ward visited Johnson’s home uninvited holding a beer. Johnson reportedly told Ward to leave because he did not want alcohol at his residence, and Ward complied.
Ward returned a short time later, however, and asked for a word with Johnson. According to Kingsport police, Ward told Johnson, “he would drink his beer anywhere he liked.â€
Ward then allegedly pulled a .22 caliber revolver from his pants, and from an approximate distance of two to three feet, fired a shot at Johnson’s face. Although the bullet missed Johnson he received a possible gunpowder burn to his eye.
Upon speaking to Johnson about the incident police went to Ward’s residence.
KPD Officer Tom Wayt reportedly announced his presence through an opened door and identified himself as a Kingsport Police Officer. When there was no response, Officer Wayt entered the residence and encountered Ward, who allegedly pointed a revolver at the officer. Ward was then arrested without further incident.
While officers were at Ward’s residence, they allegedly saw in plain view marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Ward was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
