A woman who paid two girls to bash her own boyfriend's rape victim for reporting him to the police has been found guilty.

On Tuesday, Debra Yvonne Warren appeared before a Ballarat jury in Victoria, where she was found guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Warren organised to pay two teenage girls to bash a girl who was raped by her boyfriend Wayne Jeffrey Smith in 2017.

She plotted the attack after the victim made a complaint to police about the rape, but the two girls didn't go ahead with the bashing without her knowing, the court heard.

Warren's barrister, Shane Kennedy, told the court his client had experienced a difficult life with Smith over the span of their 18-year relationship.

'The frightening, dictatorial regime that he influenced on the family has worn Debra Warren down substantially,' Mr Kennedy said.

Mr Kennedy said Warren has cut all ties with Smith and urged the court to consider a community corrections order, but Judge Paul Lacava said it wouldn't be appropriate.

'I regard this offending as very serious. Extremely serious,' Judge Lacava said.

He also told the court the maximum jail sentence for attempting to pervert the course of justice was 25 years in jail.

Serious offense

Possible 25 year sentence

She'll get 2, if that. These countries dont care about crime.

What punishment did the rapist get?

A 56-year-old woman who organised the bashing of a teenager for making a rape complaint has escaped immediate jail because her offending was "amateurish".

Debra Yvonne Warren was sentenced to a community corrections order at the County Court in Ballarat.

In November, Warren was found guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice for organizing the bashing of a teenager who was raped by Warren's partner, Wayne Jeffrey Smith, in a Dereel paddock on May 6, 2017.

After Smith had been charged with raping the girl, he and Warren paid two teenage girls $50 each to bash the rape victim in Ballarat.

The pair requested the teenagers film the bashing to confirm it was carried out.

But the two girls did not go ahead with 'the fake bashing', although Warren and Smith believed they had and paid them the $50 each.

Smith and Warren later found out the rape victim was not bashed.

In sentencing on Friday, Judge Paul Lacava said he would have accepted the prosecution's submission of immediate jail but Warren's offending was amateurish and likely occurred under the influence of Smith.
"I am satisfied Wayne Smith was a controlling influence and you acted because you did over fear," Judge Lacava said.

He said Warren did not have a criminal history and had led an unblemished life.

Warren was convicted and sentenced to a two-year CCO which includes 150 hours of unpaid community work, supervision and programs and treatment for mental health and reoffending.
