Deputies with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office are currently looking for the person(s) responsible for reportedly throwing a bag of puppies off a bridge into a bayou.

Officials with the sheriff’s office say on Sunday, Feb. 16 around 2 p.m., deputies responded to an animal cruelty complaint near the bridge by Potato Shed Road in Henderson. A witness reportedly told deputies they saw a small, white, single cab truck briefly stop on the bridge and throw a bag into the water.

Inside the bag, eight live newborn black lab puppies were found.

It’s believed the suspect’s truck is an older model Toyota or Nissan. In the back of the truck is a silver dog box with bright yellow borders around the door, officials say.

Louisiana.

Update on puppies:

The puppies were originally placed with Precious Paw Prints Animal Rescue in Acadia Parish, before being transferred to Every Paw Animal Rescue (EPAR), an Evangeline Parish animal rescue group. EPAR volunteers are bottle feeding the puppies and giving them antibiotics every eight hours, to ward off potential respiratory infections caused by their ordeal in the cold water, added Dorson.

All eight puppies are expected to survive. Those interested in adopting can visit the EPAR website or Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/everypawanimalrescue/.

There is also a picture of the puppies here, but not sure I can upload the image.

Gary James Goulas was sentenced to three years of probation after pleading guilty to eight felony counts of animal cruelty. [1, 2]

Case Details
  • The Crime: In February 2020, Goulas, then 55, stopped his truck on a bridge near Potato Shed Road in Henderson, Louisiana, and threw a paper bag containing eight live newborn black lab puppies into a bayou.
  • The Rescue: A local fisherman witnessed the incident, retrieved the bag from the water, and handed the puppies over to a foster home via an animal rescue organization. All eight puppies survived.
  • The Investigation: Video surveillance captured Goulas's truck leaving the bridge. He was arrested shortly after by the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office. [1, 2]

Resolution and Aftermath
Goulas avoided jail time by admitting to the crimes and accepting the probation terms. The case made headlines again years later when news organizations reported on delays surrounding a $7,200 reward promised to the tipster who helped secure his conviction. The payment had been stalled because a private donor had not been properly updated on the final disposition of Goulas's case.
