The group of 41 students was on their way to Richmond, VA, when bad weather forced cancellation of their flight. I have no idea why American couldn't have rescued them, but they were stuck until United flew to the rescue. They ended up with a private plane all to themselves!
The trip was planned over a year ago, so chaperones weren't impressed with American's apology and offer of a refund. Delta heard about the problem and sent a spare plane. Now, why American couldn't do that, I don't know. It surely couldn't be more expensive than refunding their tickets?
