Police say a dead baby was found at the front door of a Clearwater fire station on Friday morning.
The female infant was left at Fire Station 49 on Sky Harbor Drive. Firefighters say the child was already dead when they found her shortly before 7:30 a.m. She was a newborn and still had the umbilical cord attached.
Under Florida's Safe Haven Law, parents can leave newborns at a hospital, fire station or emergency medical facility within seven days of birth without penalty. At that time, the parents must turn the baby over to an employee.
But in this case, it appears the person who dropped the baby off never notified anyone that the child was there. Investigators say at this time, they do not know who left the baby, how long the baby had been left outside, or if the baby was alive or dead when she was dropped off.
Clearwater Police are now conducting a death investigation. The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy later on Friday.
