A man has been taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death more than six months after a 3-year-old girl was found unresponsive and later died at the hospital.

A warrant was obtained for 28-year-old David Lake’s arrest on Tuesday.

The victim, identified as was found unresponsive in a Colorado Springs home on Oct. 2. She died that day, and the coroner later ruled her death a homicide, Colorado Springs Police say.

According to Colorado Springs Police, Lake was involved in a relationship with Ritch’s mother at the time of her death.

The man accused of murder and child abuse resulting in the death of his now ex-girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter will go on trial in May. 28-year-old David Lake pleaded not guilty to all charges Thursday morning in an El Paso County Courtroom.

News5 briefly spoke with Bella Ritch’s family following the hearing. They expressed frustration in the progress of the case, stating their wish that Lake would have pleaded guilty.

He’s expected back in court in April for pre-trial conferences before the May trial which could last three weeks.

The toddler died after she was hospitalized on October 2, 2017. Police responded to an unresponsive child.

In court documents, detectives detailed how Bella was found covered in bruises and had been vomiting for several days before she was taken to the hospital.

According to the affidavit, in a follow-up interview, the doctor who operated on Bella is quoted as telling detectives, “This is the worst injury I’ve seen caused by a person.”

Another doctor is quoted as saying the injury was consistent with, “definite child abuse.” Bella suffered bruising to her head, chest, neck, stomach, thighs and legs. The coroner determined she died as a result of blunt force trauma.

I wonder what words the family has for the mother. Even if she did not know about the initial abuse but you can't tell me in the days it took for her to bring the child to the hospital she did not see the bruises on the little girl.

A man was found guilty of killing a three-year-old girl in Colorado Springs.

David Lake was sentenced to life in prison with no parole.

Lake was arrested in late April, more than six months after the little girl was found unresponsive at a southeast Springs home. Police say Bella died from blunt-force trauma.

Lake reportedly told a friend that she hit her head, and then a kid at her school pushed her into a bench a few days later. But according to the arrest affidavit, a doctor said the injury that ended Bella's life was the worst he'd ever seen caused by a person and was definitely consistent with child abuse.

Bella died in October 2017. In January of 2018 police said they were investigating her death as a homicide.
