An Oklahoma man has been arrested in connection to the cold-case disappearance of his 8-year-old neighbor who went missing from her bedroom in 1997.

Investigators used DNA to link 56-year-old Anthony Palma to the presumed death of Kirsten Hatfield, who was reported missing from her home on May 14, 1997, according to an affidavit released Tuesday by Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes.

The blond second-grader's body was never found. Kristen would have been 26 years old today.

Palma was arrested Monday on charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping, and Clabes said investigators are now searching his home for evidence. Palma lives two houses away from where Kirsten's family lived in 1997, the affidavit said.

Blood was found on Kirsten's windowsill and her underwear was found in her backyard, but the girl has not been seen since. At the time of her disappearance, investigators recovered DNA from the items but did not get a hit when running the information through a database.

The affidavit said Palma willingly gave a DNA sample in June to investigators following up on the case and results showed a match of one in 293 sextillion.

'There have been no verified sightings or contact from Kirsten since May ... of 1997,' the affidavit from Midwest City Police Detective Darrell Miller said. 'Therefore, it can be concluded that she was killed shortly after her abduction ... It is likely that Palma has been motivated to stay in the same home to conceal evidence of the crime and/or the location of Kirsten's body.'

Shortly after Kristen's disappearance, her mother, Shannon Hazen, told police she had tucked her daughter in on the evening of May 13, 1997. When she went to check on her in the morning, the 8-year-old was nowhere to be found, reported The Oklahoman.

Palma was questioned about the case in 1997 and again this past June.

Police said on both occasions, the suspect said he was home the night Kristen went missing.

Investigators said Palma's June interview was inconsistent with what he told detectives 18 years prior, reported the station KOCO.

Does this mean they have located a body?

Now that they have reopened the wounds, it would be great if her body could be found and buried properly.

I'm glad the cops never gave up and interviewed him again after this long. Maybe eventually the parents can have some peace. I know it's going to be hard having to relive all of this but at least there will finally be some accountability for this guy. Happy Birthday, Kristen!!

Wow how sad and to know they saw this man every damned day and he was the one who committed this heinous crime against their little 2nd grader :( I hope that although it has been 18 years they will find some solace in justice for their little girl. RIP little Kristen <3

According to KFOR, Anthony Palma, 58, was convicted of first-degree murder of Kirsten Hatfield after a little more than an hour of jury deliberation in October.

Eight-year-old Kirsten Hatfield disappeared from her Midwest City home in May 1997. She was never found and the case went cold.

However, prosecutors filed murder charges against Palma in 2015, after linking DNA found on a pair of Hatfield’s blood-stained underwear matched Palma.

The DNA evidence was key to prosecutors case against Palma, as Hatfield’s body has never been found.

Palma lived two doors down from Hatfield and still lived there at the time of his arrest.

After finding Palma guilty of first-degree murder, the jury recommended he serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.

On Monday, a judge agreed with the jury’s recommendation and sentenced Palma to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

At his sentencing, Palma waived his right to an appeal.

An inmate who was convicted in the 1997 cold case murder of an 8-year-old girl — whose body was never found — was strangled in his Oklahoma prison cell last month, officials said.

Anthony Palma, 59, died from “ligature strangulation and blunt force trauma to the head” on Jan. 11 while he was in his cell at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester, KFOR reported.

Palma, who was convicted in 2017 of killing 8-year-old Kirsten Hatfield, was killed by his cellmate Raymond Pillado, authorities said. Both inmates were serving life sentences for murder.

Hatfield was kidnapped from her home in Midwest City after she went to bed on May 13, 1997. Palma was found guilty of taking the girl, sexually assaulting her and killing her before dumping her body in an unknown location.

At least we know who's account to add money to.

He's a pretty bad guy. Serving several life sentences for murder:

He hasn't been a model prisoner either:

ODOC provided a list of his misconduct since his incarceration:

  • In 2010, Pillado was found with a "homemade knife"
  • In 2011, he attacked a guard.
  • In 2013, he tried to escape.
  • In 2014, he's found with another homemade knife.

And over the years, Pillado was caught with more than a dozen cellphones, among other infractions.

I told my wife last night that if wouldn't get me on some sort of list I'd send $100 to the accounts of each person who takes out a chomo in prison!

Too bad the one killer didn't whisper to him, "should have let her live because if you had then you'd probably be out of here by now".

Just because.
