According to Hollywood Police, the baby’s body was found on Monday by a construction worker, just after 8 a.m., who was doing renovation work at an apartment building.

The owner of the roofing company told 7News what his employee saw.

“When they got in the dumpster, there was a really bad odor in the dumpster and they opened the box, and inside the box, they found the baby or the body,” John Mitala said.

The man who found the baby told 7News that it’s sad and it shouldn’t have happened.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they attempted to save the baby but it was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“There was a 911 call indicating that one of the construction workers here that’s working at the 1700 block of Rodman Street, he indicated that he found a deceased infant inside the dumpster,” said Hollywood Police Officer Christian Lata. “When officers arrived on scene, they did confirm that to be true. Fire rescue also arrived on scene and pronounced the child. At this moment, our detective bureau is heading up the investigation.”

Police photographs were at the scene taking pictures of the inside of the dumpster, and crime scene detectives were swabbing the dumpster for potential fingerprints.

Now the question is what happened to the baby and who put it in the dumpster?

Area resident Eugene Yakymiw called it “gut-wrenching.”

“I’ve been here for 40 years. I never, never, ever, we’ve never had things like this. I’m just like, I don’t know, it’s shocking, it’s disgusting,” Yakymiw told CBS News.

“It’s unbelievable. It’s like if people don’t want a baby, they could have gave it up to the firemen or leave it at a hospital,” Roger Cote, who also lives in the area, told the outlet.
He said the dumpster had been there for several weeks.

“They change it once in a while. I’ve been here for 12 years and it’s the first time I’ve heard of something like this,” Cote said. “It definitely hurts. (Some) people try to make babies but they can’t make babies, they can’t conceive. They could have placed it up for adoption.”
Neighbor Jessica Gort, a therapist, wondered what led someone to discard their child.
“I wonder how this might correlate with the way the abortion laws have come about,” she told CBS News. “Are we going to see more things like this? Are there girls who are terrified, not knowing what to do?”
Florida law promoted by the Miami-based A Safe Haven allows parents to surrender newborns to firefighters and hospital workers without providing their names.

An autopsy will determine the baby’s cause of death while homicide detectives continue the investigation.
