I decided to create a thread where people can post interesting petitions they feel worthy of supporting.

I'm kicking this one off with the plight of Woody Gordon.

It seems the city wants to beautify his neighborhood. In doing so, they want to bulldoze his house and that of a few of his neighbors so a new restaurant can be built there.

The purpose of this thread really isn't to have long discussions on any certain petition. Of course anyone is welcome to comment on any of them. But, the real purpose is to share any petitions that we feel other members might be interested in signing.

Signed and posted to farce book. Eminent domain isn't about restaurants. The petition should also be sent to Applebee's corporate office as an end run around the individual developer of the franchise. While Applebee isn't doing this themselves, I don't mind tarring them for a reaction.

This one is is a a lady sentenced to almost 30 years for being the girlfriend of a drug dealer.
There was no evidence of her dealing drugs and yet she is in year 10 of her 28 year 7 month sentence.

Connecticut used eminent domain to level a New London neighborhood for a private developer and a proposed building of a new Pfizer research facility. Many years later the bulldozed neighborhood stands as an empty lot and Pfizer plans on moving it's headquarters to Ireland to avoid paying income taxes on its foreign earnings.

Kelo v. City of New London did not establish entirely new law concerning eminent domain. Although the decision was controversial, it was not the first time “public use” had been interpreted by the Supreme Court as “public purpose”. In the majority opinion, Justice Stevens wrote the "Court long ago rejected any literal requirement that condemned property be put into use for the general public" (545 U.S. 469). Thus precedent played an important role in the 5-4 decision of the Supreme Court. The Fifth Amendment was interpreted the same way as in Midkiff (467 U.S. 229) and other earlier eminent domain cases. However, in those earlier cases the court justified the use of eminent domain on the basis of elimination of social harms such as barriers to efficient exploitation of agricultural and mineral-bearing land, elimination of slums, or large-scale title misallocation. None of these factors were present in Kelo; it was a case in which the city merely wanted to increase its tax revenues, and attract a wealthier population in place of the lower middle class home owners in the redevelopment project area.

If funny that you posted this today, I was just looking around on that site a few hours ago and started reading all the non-violent offenders that are serving life terms for weed. One man never sold it or had any dealings with it, but he repaired the trucks used to smuggle it across borders. Since it was federal they gave him life. He has a clean record and had no dealings with the actual dealers or drivers.
Another woman is serving two life sentences without parole for driving in the car with her aunt to deliver Coke. Her wonderful hubby sent her along and he was proven abusive. He threatened and abused her. At court the aunt and husband testified against her because they were able to give up major players in the game to police for a lesser sentence, and she wasn't because she didn't know anyone who was a big time dealer. They are both out and she will die there. It was her first offence.
After researching and listening to different testimony, I believe that life without parole is uncalled for. It's sad actually.

You should look it up, really made me take a step back. There are people who murder and are serving 8-12, sometimes way less! These people happened to make a mistake that was non violent and are paying with life. Yes, they should have been punished to an extent but not like this.

Yes, I have known about this atrocity (the war on drugs) for years. maybe not each case you mentioned but I have read every story I have been able to find.
A lot of these people ended up fast tracked right to prison for unthinkable long sentences and even life to justify the system and all of its high paid players.

One thing I see is, rapists and murders out in just a few years is because our prisons are full. Ummmm why are they full. The war on drugs filled them up.
They can't very well turn around and say *oops, our bad, we're going to turn everyone loose*.
So, to deal with the over crowded prisons, they give new offenders (violent ones too, light sentences.)

One thing I'm pushing for is legal marijuana across all states.
That would help cut the cartel out of our lives... nit completely, but in respect to marijuana it would.

Then there is the heroin problem.
That needs to be looked at as well.

Then there's the pain medication problem. So get this (I know its illegal but I'm going to post it anyway.)
I had 8 surgeries on my shoulders and elbows. I will never be great, I will never be okay, I just have to live each day as they comr. For the most part, I don't take any prescription pills. I try to control my pain with cannabis. How ever, there are times when I need pain pills.
I can't just get them from my doctor, I have to go to a pain doctor.
So imagine, I'm bumping along for months, and then I have over worked my shoulders or had a small thing happen, I have to make an appointment to see my doctor, then he will give the okay for me to go to a pain management doctor. I then have to wait for another week or so to see that doctor.
My regular dr co pay is $45.00 then the copay to the specialist is $100.00

So for $145.00 and a 2 to 3 week wait, I can get a prescription for 15 or 20 pills.
Here comes the illegal part.
I can take that same $145.00 on the same day I'm hurting and ring up a drug dealer and get 48 pills with in an hour.

Yeah, its fucking sad that I can get faster and better care from a drug dealer than I can from 2 doctors.

Keep, that is terrible. I am of a firm belief that non violent drug offenders should have rehabilitation first, depending on the circumstances of the crime. While I do not smoke weed or advocate for it, because I do feel that young people these days are abusing it, I agree with medical use for patients with serious conditions that need it.
As far as making it legal...? I think if they did that then the hype would die down after a few years and there wouldn't be a epidemic of potheads...:jawdrop:
It would also cut down on over crowding which would lower what taxes are used for prisons.
I don't think our legal system is fair with weed offenders - I've known people that got caught with seeds in their car and served a year in jail- lost his job, kids and wife.
Worked for the same company for 12 years!

Im sorry you are going through that... Our healthcare in this county is a joke! <3

People have tried to fall back on outdated excerpts taken from their religions on butcher methods that should be abolished in Middle Eastern based religions be it Judaic or Islamic. One of the largest Kosher meat factories in the US was shut down finally in the biggest ICE raid of the country but mainly in part because of many peoples blasting out agencies after video of the way animals were killed. Im so torn on this issue.
I hate that the US slaughter houses closed. That csused the industry to shift to transporting to other countries. Long crowded rides with no feed or water. If one falls, its stepped on and will remain down for the rest of the trip as there isnt enough room for the horse to get up.
I would rather see our slaughter houses reopened and them put down humanely. Of course, my idea of humanely would be by lethal injection. That will never happen because it would taint the meat.
Not that i could ever eat horse meat, im not against someone else eating it. Realistically, there are so many unwanted horses and no place for them to go except to slaughter. The other option would be lethal injection and creation. There is no way our gov. Would accept that expense.
