Police have arrested two brothers for the death of the father protecting his young daughter during a robbery in the city's Spring Garden neighborhood.

A 16-year-old, and his 21-year-old brother were taken into custody. Police say the 16-year-old was the alleged shooter.

38-year-old Gerard Grandzol was fatally shot just after 8 p.m. Thursday in the 1500 block of Melon Street, where he lived.

Police the suspects approached him, took his wallet and tried to steal his SUV with his 2-year-old daughter inside, but he wouldn't let them. As a result, the suspects killed him.

"They wanted the car and he wouldn't give up the car. And they shot him for it," said Philadelphia Police Captain John Ryan.

Neighbors quickly rushed to Grandzol's side.

"By the time we ran up to him, people were bandaging him, holding him," one resident told Action News. "And right in the head, right in the face, there was a pool of blood."

Grandzol had just parked the family SUV when two men approached. One was armed with a gun.

The victim was hit at least once in the head at point blank range.

He was rushed by police to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he later died.

Investigators say the suspects are in their late teens or early twenties and the motive was to rob Grandzol. They also say they believe the attack was random.

Residents were left in shock.
"He loved Philadelphia. He loved Spring Garden," another neighbor said.

That neighbor, who knew Grandzol, did not want to be identified out of fear of retaliation. However, he says he was a member of the Spring Garden Civic Association with Grandzol.

The neighbor says what happened Thursday night is the result of a buildup of violence over many months.

"There was a number of serious muggings that started taking place. Primarily they were teenagers attacking men and women."

So many neighbors say he loved his family, especially his two daughters more than anything.

Gerard Grandzol, 38. Father of two, including a newborn. Handyman. Proud community advocate. Master of the grill at block parties. A neighbor friendly enough to fix children’s bikes, or to pick up the packages of those who had just moved onto the 1500 block of Melon Street.

But Thursday night, according to police, after Grandzol drove home from playing Frisbee with his 2-year-old daughter and his dog in Lemon Hill, he was fatally shot in the face in front of his car. His daughter was still sitting in the Audi’s back seat.

“Senseless tragedy,” said Homicide Capt. John Ryan. “Senseless violence.”

Ryan said two men approached Grandzol on foot outside his home around 8 p.m. and robbed him of his wallet. When Grandzol declined to turn over his car keys because his daughter was inside the car, Ryan said, the men shot him twice in the face...

...Chief Inspector Scott Small said Grandzol “was shot from point-blank range.”

Responding officers took Grandzol to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he died at 9:42 p.m.

Philadelphia police have arrested two brothers in the shooting death of Spring Garden community activist Gerard Grandzol.

Maurice Roberts, 21, of Philadelphia, and his 16-year-old brother are in custody, police said. Police said the teen, formally identified Monday as Marvin Roberts, was the shooter and has been charged as an adult with murder, robbery, carjacking and related offenses.

At a briefing Saturday night, Homicide Capt. John Ryan said the teen was believed to be the only suspect armed. The weapon was a 9mm handgun, police said.

Marvin Roberts, 16, has been charged as an adult in the murder of Gerard Grandzol.

Grandzol, 38, was shot outside his Melon Street residence at about 8 p.m. Thursday. A well-loved community member and family man, Grandzol was approached by two males who took his wallet, according to police. When asked to hand over his car keys, Grandzol did not resist, police said Saturday night, but wanted to get his 2-year-old daughter out of the car. It appeared at least the younger Roberts may have felt Grandzol wasn’t moving fast enough, police said.

“The 16-year-old just stepped up to Mr. Grandzol and shot him twice in the head,” Ryan said...

...The arrests were described as a round-the-clock team effort by law enforcement, including various units of the city police, SEPTA police, and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Police said private video at the scene and SEPTA video of the suspects fleeing via train helped identify them.

SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel said his officials, using Philadelphia police descriptions, located video of the suspects’ flight by Friday morning. Nestel said one of his officers recognized the elder Roberts as someone the officer had arrested in March on a narcotics charge.

“ ‘I know that guy. I locked him up,’ ” Nestel said his officer said.

Ryan said the teen was identified as a suspect early Saturday, and he was questioned at Police Headquarters.

The elder Roberts was taken into custody about 6:15 p.m. Saturday at an Extended Stay America motel in Mount Olive in North Jersey, said police sources familiar with the investigation. The U.S. Marshals Service and the city police fugitive unit participated in the arrest, which took place without incident.

Police said the brothers’ family members cooperated in the investigation...

...The brothers will face murder and related charges, police said.

A teenager has been sentenced to 35 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering a Philadelphia father in front of his two-year-old daughter during an attempted carjacking.

Marvin Roberts, 18, pleaded guilty to first degree murder, robbery and other charges on Friday over the 2017 shooting death of 38-year-old Gerard Grandzol.

Roberts was given the mandatory minimum sentence following a plea deal with the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office.

His older brother, Maurice Roberts, 21, pleaded guilty earlier this month to third degree murder and robbery in relation to the fatal shooting.

Maurice was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in state prison.

Grandzol's widow, Kristin Grandzol, declined to go to trial to seek a longer sentence, according to NBC10.

'I understand why everyone wants more time, because I do,' she said. 'I don't want to take any chances. I feel like justice will be served in prison.'
