Almost a year after a small dog was brought in for treatment of a broken jaw and head injuries, his owner has pleaded guilty to falsely reporting the incident to police She has also given up ownership of the dog.

Samantha Rizzo, the Granby dog control officer who was terminated in the case, waived her cruelty trial at the last minute. She agreed to one year probation, including no possession of animals in that time.. Rizzo will also do 250 hours of community service and pay $1200 restitution. She will be in court one more time in the case, to be formally sentenced in August..

The dog's future was a major concern. Brody John, who cannot close his mouth completely after reconstructive surgery, has been in the care of Paws Across Oswego County. He now has a permanent home, and will not be put up for adoption.

Rizzo allegedly staged the dog as a stray, denying knowledge of who owned the injured animal, according to authorities, but a state police investigation revealed the dog belonged to Rizzo in July, prompting police to file the third-degree falsely reporting an incident charge.

A report from Cornell University Hospital for Animals later determined the dog’s jaw was broken by blunt force trauma, which led to the animal cruelty charges.
