A house was extensively damaged by a fire early Friday after a man tried to light a cigarette after spraying a nightstand with alcohol to kill bedbugs, officials said.
Colerain Township emergency crews responded to the house in the 2500 block of Crest Road just after 2 a.m.
Fire officials said six people were in the home and everyone escaped.
Colerain Township Battalion Chief Tim Beach said the homeowner was trying to eliminate bed bugs using isopropyl alcohol in a pump sprayer in the bedroom.
"At the end of this process, he attempted to light a cigarette and the bedroom caught fire," officials said.
The flash ignition burned the homeowner who was taken to Mercy Fairfield Hospital for treatment.
“Spraying a flammable substance in a confined area with improper ventilation is not advised,” Beach said. “This is best left to a professional exterminator.”

Pffft ... poppycock.

Fire seems a perfectly reasonable solution to bed bugs, lice and spiders to me. Why all the fuss? :woot:
Spiders are the shit. I look after one that lives under my deck. They kill things that I don't want in my home. I think it's a catface spider.
I've only seen bedbugs one time, when I worked at a hotel. They're horrifying.

Spiders find me tasty. Too tasty! Just getting over my fourth bite this summer. The fevered, dripping sweat, pukey exhausted thing is getting old. If it's an arachnid it dies. Its self defense! :shame:

You'd have an easier time getting rid of bed bugs by burning the house down, that's for damn sure. I once was involved helping the local shelter to get rid of an infestation, we had to take it all the way to the news to get it handled and it took months and literally thousands of dollars.

Uggh just the thought of a bedbug infestation gives me heart palpitations!

I once pet-sat a friend’s cat which left me w a guest room infested w fleas- for weeks I tried every chemical, natural & supernatural method of eradication but in the end I had to rip up the carpet & even seal the wood floor beneath bc they were literally popping out of the cracks.

So to imagine trying to rid my home of a super-bug like bed bugs, I might also go straight to the fire method!

There are only two white rhinos left on the face of the earth. Yet there are millions of these horrible bloodsucking monsters. It should be the other way around. However, there is hope:

Never dealt with bed bugs (thank black baby jesus), but fleas are an old nemesis of mine. Every damn pesticide in existence failed to rid me of the damnable little monsters. Diatomaceous earth, however, finally brought about doomsday for them. Rather quickly, too.
Funny, that; a rare instance of the cheapest solution also being the best solution.

Diatomaceous earth is fucking brutal, too. It doesn't poison them, it literally rips them up like a baby crawling through broken glass. On the insect scale, it's like concertina wire. Just shreds 'em.

When you're dealing with something that seemingly chugs most insecticides and can still pass a sobriety test, brutal is the only option. No matter what we sprayed or how heavy, it never seemed to affect the fleas at all. The difference with DE was almost immediate.
I do feel bad about every other insect that wanders by during a DE treatment though. Most of them serve some kind of purpose without inflicting misery on everyone, but the powder doesn't discriminate.
