A 20-year-old Pennsylvania man has been charged in the brutal slaying of his 14-year-old cousin, who died days after being stabbed more than 80 times and shot in the head, PEOPLE confirms.

A motive remains unclear.

Colin Haag III is facing a criminal homicide charge in connection with the death of cousin Autumn Bartle, according to Bucks County District Attorney Matthew Weintraub.

Autumn died from her injuries on April 2, three days after her mother found her unconscious and bleeding on the living room floor of the family’s home in Bristol Township. The girl was suffering from dozens of stab wounds and a gunshot to her left temple, authorities say.

Investigators believe Autumn was attacked in a bathroom in the home, leaving it covered in blood and handprints.

It was “apparent that Autumn Bartle, with bloodied hands, had attempted to climb out of the window and escape, but was unsuccessful,” states a probable cause affidavit in the cause, which was obtained by PEOPLE.

Haag, Autumn’s cousin, was living with her family at the time but wasn’t home when Autumn’s body was discovered. He was arrested Wednesday in nearby Bensalem Township after his description was circulated statewide.

Police say ballistics evidence allegedly connects him to the crime, according to the probable cause affidavit. What’s more, authorities claim they recovered Autumn’s blood from a notebook in Haag’s backpack when he was taken into custody.

At the time, Haag was allegedly found walking alongside a road in Bensalem with his bag and then tried to flee as officers started walking toward him, the affidavit states. He allegedly shot himself in the throat as authorities neared.

“The defendant stated that he shot himself because he didn’t want to go to jail,” reads the affidavit.

Haag was treated for his gunshot wound and is being held at the Bucks County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 cash bail.

He is charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, kidnapping, unlawful restraint of a minor, receiving stolen property, carrying a firearm without a license and possessing an instrument of crime.

Haag has yet to enter a plea to the charges against him and does not have an attorney of record who could comment on his behalf.

Asked about a suspected motive in the killing, Weintraub told reporters on Friday it was still under investigation, according to Philly.com.

“We hope to have that answer,” he said. “We’ll continue to work on getting that answer. But sometimes, as we stand here in this case, you look into the face of a killer and you don’t get answers. You see only darkness.”

A GoFundMe campaign has been started to help financially support Autumn’s funeral. Her organs were donated by her family, Weintraub said.

He did more than stab and shoot that poor girl.
Count on it.

Now give him a gun with one bullet in it and tell him to just get it right this time.
Otherwiise put him in town square to be mob lynched.

. He allegedly shot himself in the throat as authorities neared.
World record: tiniest bullet wound ever recorded.

I feel horrible for her mother. I can't imagine finding my child like that.

Surprise, surprise, cousin Slim was trying to rape the 8th grader.
MAY 24, 2018
Authorities in Bucks County say the 20-year-old Bristol Township man accused of stabbing his teenage cousin more than 80 times in late March was trying to cover up an alleged attempted rape of the girl at the family's home in Croydon.

Prosecutors charged Colin Haag III last month in the killing of 14-year-old Autumn Bartle, who was stabbed and shot to death on March 30. The teen was found unconscious and bleeding on the living room floor when her mother returned home from work on March 30.

Prosecutors said Haag lived in the basement of the home and was nowhere to be found when the girl was discovered by her mother.

In the hours after the incident, Haag was found wandering the streets of Bensalem and attempted to shoot himself when confronted by police. He was hospitalized and later held on gun charges as investigators pieced together the case.

He was later charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, kidnapping, unlawful restraint of a minor and related offenses.

Inside Haag's backpack, police allegedly found a spiral notebook with blood matching Bartle's DNA. On the last page, a blood-marked notation read, "this is the last of slim that's all you get it's the end 4 me," according to prosecutors.

At a hearing on Wednesday, prosecutors added a first-degree felony charge of attempted rape, according to court records.

Colin "I just got so mad, I know she was my cousin, but it's Pennsylvania, so what's the problem?" Haag III

No trial yet that I could find, but he is currently locked up Buck County Detention Center.

Autumn Bartle’s inner strength filled a Bucks County courtroom Thursday.

It was referenced by prosecutors and Bucks County President Judge Wallace H. Bateman, who sentenced her killer, 21-year-old Colin Haag, to serve the rest of his life behind bars, after Haag pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and other charges.

Public defenders Deborah Weinmann and Ann P. Russavage-Faust, in an attempt to explain what may have led their client to commit what Weinmann called a “heinous act,” described Haag’s chaotic upbringing, which included anxiety, depression, abandonment and his mother taking her own life while on the phone with him. Weinmann said he lived in a fantasy world in which he had aspirations of being a gangster rapper.

Weinmann cited Haag’s IQ of 71 and said she didn’t think he had the ability to express his feelings of sorrow to Autumn’s family members as she did so on his behalf.

But Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Schorn said Haag’s demeanor in court and in the months since the killing have showed a complete lack of remorse.

That throat hole might actually interest some prisoners a little.... they may need to enlarge it some... but I'm sure they'd be thrilled with a variation on the same old holes!
