Arthur Edigin, 62, opened fire on a car with the woman and her adult daughter in a parking lot in front of the church campus at 11500 block of Huffmeister Road at 7 p.m., according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

The woman, 66, died while her daughter is in critical condition at a hospital, where police have posted several units out of precaution.

The suspect is believed to have fired five to six gunshots. He was last seen driving a white 2008 Suburban with a damaged front-right panel, police said.

The church addressed the shooting in a brief statement to Facebook.

"Two individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment. All others are safe and accounted for at this time. Police are allowing those who were on campus at the time of the shooting to make their way to the cars to leave," the statement read.

The church was surrounded with police tape soon after the shooting, which prompted the Christ the Redeemer Catholic School on the campus to be placed on lock down.

"Those inside are safe. Police are on site. We'll update with details as we have them," the school tweeted.

Several people gathered in nearby parking lots waiting to be questioned by police.

A spokeswoman for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston said the church is cooperating with local authorities as they investigate the shooting.

Update

A man accused of fatally shooting his estranged wife and critically wounding his estranged daughter outside a Texas church early Friday was found dead inside a hotel room, police said.

Arthur Edigin, 62, had been inside a hotel in Houston off the Sam Houston Parkway, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.

"Deputies entered the hotel room and found Edigin deceased inside," police said.

Hours earlier, Edigin allegedly walked up to the passenger side of a vehicle in which the women were sitting outside Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in the Cypress area of Houston on Thursday and fired as many as six shots, sheriff’s office Cpt. Marcus Kinnard-Bing said during an evening news conference.

The 66-year-old woman killed was believed to be the suspect’s estranged wife and the wounded 31-year-old woman was believed to be his estranged daughter, Kinnard-Bing said. Police believe the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute.

Authorities tweeted a photo and said they were looking for Edigin in connection with the shooting. The man was described by the sheriff's office as being five-foot-four and “driving a white ‘08 Suburban w/damaged right front quarter panel.”

There were about 100 people inside the church at the time of the shooting, police said. Churchgoers were allowed to leave the church after it was initially put on lockdown.

A mother at the scene told Houston's KTRK-TV that her husband and children were inside the church during the lockdown. Pam Ledesma’s spouse let her know that they were located inside a gym closet and were praying the rosary, she told the outlet.

"It's just crazy to see that stuff like happens, number one at a church, and I know we live in Houston, but at the same time, I mean, I don't know what kind of person would do that at a church when people are just trying to pray at night," Ledesma told KTRK.

Asshole should have just shot himself instead of taking his family down with him.

Never really understood the whole 'If I can't <fill in complete BS reason(s) here>, then no one can!' mentality. Seems insanely selfish IMO.

Suicide is selfish too. Preferable to killing others, but still selfish.

Suicide is a private matter.
Not at all. It affects everyone.

For her 40th birthday, my sister got a restraining order against her husband. He told her that he was going to kill himself in front of her so she would always know it was his fault. A few days later he drove up in front of her house and just sat in the car. After a few minutes, she called the police. When they got there, they went up to the car and Michael was dead. Killed himself in front of her house. 2 years later, their son, drunk and high, like he dad liked to be, decided he couldn't live without his dad anymore, so he shot himself in the head in front of her garage door. It is most defiantly NOT a private matter.

It should be a decision one makes alone and carries out alone in private.

Having survived the loss of my brother and my best friend in less than 30 days I know all about how everyone is effected.

In the case of this story, he killed his wife and injured her daughter.
He should kept it private and offed himself alone.
