A Midlands man is behind bars in connection with the death of his 5-year-old son.

According to the Richland County Sheriff's Department investigators were contacted by the Richland County Coroner's Officer concerning an unresponsive 5-year-old boy that had been rushed to the hospital.

The boy, who was later identified as Jaiden Hammond, was rushed by ambulance to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital from his father's Overland Drive home.

Investigators say Jaiden had severe bruising throughout his body and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

An autopsy revealed the child had significant injuries on his head and body that resulted in his death.

The boys father, 37-year-old Michael Gamble, was arrested by the State Law Enforcement Division Fugitive Team in Manning without incident.

On June 16, 2022, a Richland County jury found Michael Gamble guilty of homicide by child abuse for killing his five-year-old son, Jaiden Hammond.
The jury deliberated for an hour before finding Gamble guilty and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
According to the Fifth Circuit Solicitor's Office, EMS was called to Gamble's home where they found the child unresponsive and showing signs of rigor on January 22, 2019.
Officials say EMS attempted to resuscitate Jaiden and eventually transported him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His body was covered in bruises, including some on his right hip, torso, back, left cheek, right cheek, and chin.

According to officials, Gamble provided law enforcement with multiple versions of the events leading to the child’s death.
Additionally, his girlfriend told law enforcement that she heard Gamble beating the child with a belt around midnight for about 10 minutes because he had been acting up on the bus the previous day.

An autopsy was performed where he found that Jaiden sustained multiple subdural hematomas and other brain injuries.
