An 11-year-old refugee boy living in Texas was impaled to death as he climbed over an iron fence surrounding an apartment complex's swimming pool earlier this week.
Fort Worth police say a group of children climbed the barrier to get into a locked swimming pool at the Ladera Palms Apartments in the 2300 block of Baroque Drive at around 7pm on Monday.
According to police, the children scattered and climbed over the fence when a security guard told them to leave.
That is when one of the children, 11-year-old Jean Pierre Mwenge, lost his footing and was impaled while scaling the 6-foot fence, which had iron spikes at the top.
Mwenge was taken to Cook Children's Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from injuries to his chest and stomach just after 8pm.
Fort Worth Police Officer Bradley Perez tells the Star-Telegram that the death is considered 'an extremely unfortunate accident' and no criminal charges are expected.
His uncle, Signe Mwenge, told Fox 4 Jean Pierre was the son of Congolese nationals who was born in a refugee camp in Tanzania.
