"A mother is now doing 12 days in jail for an extreme case of truancy.

Muskegon County Prosecutors told FOX 17 Amanda Crowell, 36, was given multiple second chances and warnings about the consequences of keeping her children from school. Crowell’s 8 year-old had 83 unexcused absences, while her high-school-aged child had 111 hours of unexcused absences during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years at Fruitport High School and Edgewood Elementary.

The prosecutor’s office became involved after the schools’ many attempts to convince Crowell to make sure her children were in school failed."

It's not like she wasn't given plenty of opportunity to get those little shits to school...

Maat says both Fruitport High School and Edgewood Elementary School tried to work with Crowell to ensure her children were in class. High school administrators sent several letters to Crowell and met with her on multiple occasions, Maat confirmed. He said Edgewood Elementary School also sent letters to Crowell and offered to meet with her.

Maat says the schools then contacted the prosecutor’s office, which also sent two letters to Crowell and met with her.

In April 2018, Crowell signed a contract vowing her children wouldn’t miss any additional classes. About a month later, the elementary school notified the prosecutor’s office that the youngest child was still missing school, which led to the charge.

In August, Crowell agreed to a plea deal. She would plead guilty to truancy and the charge would be dismissed if she got assistance and kept both kids in school.

However, court records show Crowell missed her sentencing on the truancy charge, leading to a bench warrant for her arrest.

While I believe children need some sort of education whether that be Public, private, Home, Online; I don't believe monitoring the children's hours away and forwarding to law enforcement is the Governments responsibility and nor it should be. This just screams "Police State" when your children will not show up for their scheduled programming, there will be consequences! The only thing the Schools were responsible for was proceeding to simply drop the children's admission status, and letting it go. Mom can then look for another alternative.

Public schools get pissy when kids are absent because they don't get paid for that kid's ass to be in that seat for that day. Most of them don't genuinely care about the kid's education. It's all a statistics game.

I'm wondering what it was the mother said to the school and govt. as a reason for the situation. Did she just not give a shit? Did the kids stay at home when absent, even the high schooler, and what were they doing during that time? Playing games, sleeping, doing drugs, what? Or maybe it was SHE who is doing drugs? It seems extreme to get to the point of arrest and jail time for this. Just sayin...
