A 3-month-old baby girl died after she was left in a car Saturday afternoon near Rose Hill, officials said.

Emergency crews were called at around 4 p.m. for a child not breathing. Paramedics pronounced a 3-month-old girl dead at the scene.

Investigators determined that the 44-year-old mother had taken her daughter with her to a baby shower, and she came home at around 12:30 p.m., Herzet said. The mom was tired and went in the house, gave other children chores to do and took a nap.

The woman woke up about three and a half hours later and remembered she forgot the baby in the car, Herzet said. The girl was lethargic and was not breathing, so she called 911. Butler County paramedics, two deputies and Rose Hill firefighters responded.

Temperatures at the time would have been in the 80s, Herzet said.

Results are pending from an autopsy performed Monday morning, Herzet said. The sheriff’s office investigation is ongoing, and the case will be presented to the county attorney for any determination of criminal charges

I'm surprised that at least one of the older kids didn' tsay, hey mom where's the baby, did you leave her with Aunt Mabel at the baby shower?

But,then again, they are children and we don't know the ages and just because she gave them chores doesn't mean they are very old at all. The fact that she feels comfortable going to sleep with a house full of kids means nothing. We've read of worse things on here.

“The girl was lethargic and was not breathing, so she called 911. Butler County paramedics, two deputies and Rose Hill firefighters responded.”

How does one use lethargic and not breathing together to describe the baby’s condition. When the term lethargic is used describe a person as lifeless it’s meant as lack of energy or tiredness-NOT actually as being without life. “Gee, she seems really tired-wonder if the fact she’s not breathing has anything to do with it?”

No charges. That was the call after a lengthy investigation into the death of a Rose Hill infant left in a vehicle.

Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet says detectives were unable to prove that the 3-month-old baby’s mother was reckless or that she killed the child on purpose.

Herzet says the woman returned from a baby shower on June 8 and forgot to take her child into the house with her.

He says she fell asleep, and when she woke up, she ran to the car and called 911, but it was too late. Herzet says although it’s difficult to understand, this happens across the country.

“Our conversation with our county attorney, and our detectives and myself, there will be no charges filed on this case,” said Sheriff Kelly Herzet, Butler County. “A very good family, and it’s just a tragedy that this had to occur, and they had to lose a child.”

Herzet says the mother had no alcohol or drugs in her system at the time, and the child’s autopsy ruled the manner of death as an accident. Due to the fact that there are no charges, the family’s identity will not be released.
