Two people from Constantine were charged with child abuse after their 7-month-old daughter was hospitalized with skull fractures and bruising.

Angel Rickett, 20, was arraigned Wednesday on a count of first-degree child abuse and Derek Lamere, 26, was arraigned on a charge of fourth-degree child abuse.

The Constantine Police Department says it was notified that the baby had come in to the emergency room there and doctors suspected abuse.

Doctors told investigators that the child's injuries didn't line up with her mother's story that she had fallen off the couch and onto the floor at their home.

Police interviewed Rickett and Lamere. They say the investigation found that Rickett shook the baby, causing her head to hit the wall, and that she slapped her in the face.

Lamere was charged because police say he knew it happened, but didn't protect the baby or call them.

A St. Joseph County judge sentenced Angel Rickett to serve eight to 40 years in prison for child abuse against her infant daughter.

The Constantine Police Department began to have suspicions after her 7-month-old daughter was taken to the hospital in March, and Three Rivers officers contacted them about alleged abuse.

Doctors told investigators that the child’s injuries did not match with Rickett's story that her daughter had accidentally fallen off the couch. The infant suffered severe skull fractures and bruising.

Investigators allege that Rickett shook her baby violently and slapped her causing the infant's head to hit the wall at the womans residence.

Her partner Derek Lamere was charged with fourth-degree child abuse because police say he had knowledge of the abuse but didn't do anything. Lamere was later acquitted of all charges.

In the mugshot, that woman has anger and affront written all over her face. How dare someone arrest her for beating her 7 month old baby.

... I don't understand the idiocy of mind and shittyness that would permit a woman to beat a 7 month old baby.

... I hope she never has access to a baby (or child) again.
