A mom sealed her newborn in plastic bags and left the baby girl to die in agony for at least two hours, a court has heard.

Hannah Cobley, 29, who hid her pregnancy from family and friends, is alleged to have killed the child in a “chilling” deliberate act on 26 April 2017.

Prosecutors say she gave birth in an outside toilet at around 2am and forced something inside the infant’s throat to silence her cries.

Cobley is accused of inflicting severe head injuries on the baby and sealing her inside three plastic bags despite signs that she may still have been alive, Leicester Crown Court heard.

She is then said to have abandoned the child’s body in an overgrown area at the farm, where she lived with her parents in Leicestershire.

A post-mortem revealed that the baby survived her injuries for two hours or more before dying, the court heard.

On the night her baby died, Cobley has accepted making internet searches including one at 3.31am reading "how long can a newborn last without milk in the freezing cold".

Another at 5.06am asked "when a baby is born how long can it survive without being fed".

Cobley, has denied murdering the newborn, claiming she believed the baby was stillborn. "Although premature at 32 weeks' gestation - roughly seven months - she was a normal healthy baby. "Miss Cobley did nothing to ensure her baby lived.

"First, she silenced the baby's cries by forcing something into her throat, which was later found to have caused injuries in that location.

"Then she assaulted the baby causing very severe head injuries.

"Finally, despite recognising that the baby might still be alive, she sealed the baby inside three plastic bags - layered, one on top of the other - and abandoned her body in an overgrown area of garden behind one of the farm outbuildings.

Jurors were also told the defendant does not admit an intention cause serious injury, and may raise a partial defence of infanticide.

This is an alternative verdict to murder where a mother kills her child while her mind is disturbed by a failure to recover from the effects of childbirth.

Mum ‘left baby to die in plastic bag after giving birth in secret’

A new mother fractured her baby’s skull before wrapping her in plastic bags and leaving her to die in undergrowth after she secretly gave birth, a court heard.

Hannah Cobley, 29, said she believed her baby was stillborn when she gave birth in an outside toilet at her parents’ farm in Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire in the early hours of April 26, 2017. The unnamed baby sustained three skull fractures, bruising and a brain injury, but may have lived for more than two hours after the birth, Leicester Crown Court was told.

Former grammar school pupil Cobley, who works for her dad’s haulage firm, denies murder. Jonas Hankin QC, prosecuting, told the jury in his opening speech: ‘Neither the father of the child, whose identity is unknown, nor the mother’s family and friends, were aware of the pregnancy, which was the product of a consensual one-night stand with a stranger.’

The baby was born premature at 32 weeks between 2am and 2.45am but was described as ‘a normal, healthy baby’. The prosecutor said: ‘The birth was rapid and uncomplicated. She did not describe experiencing any significant pain.

‘If Miss Cobley had brought her pregnancy to medical attention prior to the delivery, good obstetric and midwifery care would most likely have ensured her baby was delivered in good condition. ‘If, having given birth, Miss Cobley had alerted her parents and summoned an ambulance, and been taken with her baby to hospital, it is highly likely the baby would have survived.’

He told the court the defendant did ‘nothing to ensure the baby would survive’. Mr Hankin said: ‘The prosecution case is that Miss Cobley, with chilling clarity of purpose, deliberately and intentionally killed her baby.’

Jurors were told Cobley tried to silence her baby’s cries by forcing something into her throat, then assaulted her, causing severe head injuries. The prosecutor said: ‘Finally, despite recognising the baby might still be alive, she sealed the baby inside three plastic bags, one on top of the other and abandoned her body in an overgrown garden.

A mom in the UK who wrapped her baby in plastic bags and left her to die after forcing an object down her throat to stop her crying has been convicted of murder.

Hannah Cobley, 29, is facing life behind bars after inflicting severe head injuries on the premature baby before dumping her in the bushes.

The mom claimed she didn’t know she was pregnant after a one-night stand with a stranger, but cops learned she had searched phrases including “signs of stillbirth,” “how long a baby can survive without being fed” and “what happens when a newborn baby is dropped.”

And jurors today took just an hour and a half to convict the mom of murder.

Leicester Crown Court had previously heard how the unnamed child suffered a catalog of injuries including three skull fractures, bruising, cuts and a brain injury.

Shockingly, an object had been forced down the child’s throat after she had been born prematurely at 32 weeks.

The four-week trial heard that the baby girl was found in the bushes next to a shed outside Cobley’s parents’ farmhouse on April 30, 2017.

During her police interview, Cobley admitted she had given birth but said the baby was not crying or moving, so she put her in a bag and placed her in the garden.
Judge Mrs Justice Carr today sentenced Cobley to a minimum of 18 years in prison.

The judge said as she sentenced: “You may never be released”

Cobley left the dock showing no emotion and saying nothing.
