A mother and two fathers have been charged with neglect after a 6-month-old boy was taken to IU Ball Memorial Hospital with serious head injuries.

Doctors told police that the child had obvious swelling to his head and was preliminarily diagnosed with blood or fluid on the brain in more than one location. The infant was flown to Riley Hospital for Children for emergency surgery and more testing. The infant’s current condition is not known at this time.

Police say the child’s mother lives with two men who share responsibilities for the infant and their two other children in the home, the oldest being approximately 4 years old.

Investigators visited the home and found what they called “deplorable conditions.” The police report describes “foul substances” on the floor believed to be human waste and unsanitary and filthy conditions throughout the home.

The two young children in the home were also filthy and diagnosed with lice and scabies, according to police.

During interviews with police, all three parents initially claimed the child had fallen out of a swing and onto tile flooring. But in a separate interview, the mother told police that she had been alone with the infant several weeks ago and had “blacked out” after becoming upset that she was not getting any help. She told police she believed she may have caused the baby’s injuries, but she did not take him to the hospital immediately because she wanted to see if he had any symptoms.

The mother, Mikayla England, is facing aggravated battery and neglect charges.

Jademan England, the father of the other two children, and Michael Habegger, the father of the baby, were also charged with neglect.

DCS now has custody of all 3 children.

A week after her arrest on charges she abused and neglected her six-month-old son, a Muncie mother was released from the Delaware County jail on Thursday.

Mikayla Ann England, 24, had been preliminarily charged with aggravated battery and two counts of neglect of a dependent.

“I don’t believe anyone should assume just because charges weren’t filed right away that they won’t be,” Delaware County Prosecutor Eric Hoffman said Thursday. “We want to take our time with this case and make sure everything’s done right.”

England was arrested April 11, a day after Muncie police were notified her infant son had been taken to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital with “possible head trauma.” The child was later transferred to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, where he underwent emergency surgery.

England reportedly told police she had noticed the baby’s head was swelling more than a month earlier, and also said she might have caused his injuries, suggesting she had “blacked out” while holding him.

Hoffman – who declined to discuss specific allegations in the case – said there were “thousands of pages of medical records, and they can be medically complex.”

“It takes a while to evaluate the evidence,” he said.

The baby’s father, Michael Cole Habegger, 21, and the father of Mikayla England’s other two children, 26-year-old Jademan Hawk England, were also arrested on preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent.

Both men have since been released, and formal charges to date have not been filed against them.

Amy Kesler, a city police sergeant, reported the southside apartment where the three adults and three children lived was “filthy with unsanitary conditions for children.”

Of course.. why live ANY other fucking way.. right?! :bored:

I have a bad feeling no one is going to held accountable for what happened to this baby the only silver lining is that they children will be removed from these dirt bags and not returned.
