The incident happened on the A381 in the South Hams earlier this evening.

Shortly before 7pm, Kingsbridge police took to Facebook and said: "Emergency services are currently dealing with a single vehicle RTC on the A381 by the South Milton turn where a car has overturned.

"The driver stated he swerved to avoid an octopus. He is currently in custody on suspicion of drug driving."

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that a man in 40s was now in custody at Torquay Police Station, and had been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. The spokesperson said that the crash had occurred between
Salcombe and Kingsbridge.

Roads monitoring service Inrix first reported a crash on the A381, on Salcombe Raod at Wooltson, at 17:29. At 18:38 it reported the road has been cleared and traffic has returned to normal.

Inrix's final update read: "Overturned car removed on A381 Salcombe Road between Burleigh Lane (Woolston) and Higher Town (Malborough).Affecting traffic travelling between Salcombe and Kingsbridge."

Since the incident, the octopus in question has been spotted in a field where police found the car in a ditch.

A police spokesperson on Wednesday said: "The 49-year-old man from Salcombe remains in custody at Torquay."

Police in Kingsbridge said it was a one-vehicle crash near the South Milton turn.
