A baby boy died after he was allegedly thrown into a river just weeks before his first birthday.

Grief-stricken mum Emma Blood said she held and kissed her 10-month-old son Zakari (Zak) "for hours" in hospital after he was rescued from the River Irwell in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester.

The 22-year-old mum described her little boy as "my world, my heart, my soul" on her Facebook profile, where she told friends of her final moments with her boy, writing: "I wish I was dead instead."

She said she did not know Zak was dead until she arrived at A&E less than three hours after the alleged murder.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning.

Horrified witnesses said the baby was thrown into the river in a Moses basket from an area around a bridge.

Witnesses said the suspect was arrested at the Lock Keeper pub nearby.

The baby had been in the area "for a number of hours" before the incident, according to police.

A man charged with murdering his baby son has been detained in hospital under the Mental Health Act.

Zak Eko, 22, is charged with murdering his 11-month-old son Zakari William Bennett-Eko.

The baby boy was found in the River in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester on September 11.

Zakari was retrieved from the water and taken to hospital but he later died.

His father has been moved from Forest Bank prison in Salford to a secure hospital while he awaits a murder trial, reports the Manchester Evening News.

A trial date had been fixed for March 9.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police has since confirmed Mr Eko has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act pending the outcome of psychiatric reports.

They also confirmed he had been sectioned under sections 48 and 49 of the Act, which allows health professionals to transfer someone from a prison to a hospital for assessment and treatment.

A judge has said that Zak Bennett-Eko, 23 should never have been discharged from mental health services.

The father, a paranoid schizophrenic who believed the 11-month-old was turning into the devil, was given the hospital order on Tuesday after being found guilty of the manslaughter by diminished responsibility.

Psychiatrist Dr John Crosby told the hearing Bennett-Eko should 'never have been discharged' from mental health care services in the years before his son's death.

'In your case, and this is accepted by your treating clinicians, there is the prospect that you may never be well enough to be released.' - Mr Justice Fraser, Judge

The court heard Bennett-Eko, who was too unwell to appear for the trial or the sentencing, was previously diagnosed with psychosis related to cannabis and sectioned at the age of 15 but discharged into the care of his GP in 2017.
