A 14-year-old boy from Florida is behind bars for allegedly murdering a 3-year-old girl that he was babysitting.

Jonathan Godwin is accused of repeatedly hitting the girl in her chest, back, legs and head with his fist and a belt in an attempt to get her to stop crying.

He had been “left in charge to babysit” her and two other small children on Aug. 16, according to police.

“While watching the victim for several hours, [Godwin] became annoyed with the victim for crying and repeatedly hit her,” cops said in a press release Friday. “The victim was found unresponsive by [Godwin’s] mother, and was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.”

An investigation later revealed that Godwin, who was arrested Friday, had a history of “abusing and burning another small child,” according to police.

Cops said he admitted to the abuse and also confessed to being involved in the little girl’s death, which was ruled a homicide.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office could not immediately comment on whether Godwin’s mother would be facing criminal charges when reached by The Post on Friday. The boy was being held on murder and aggravated child abuse charges.

Stories like this just make me afraid we have bred out empathy rendering this and future generations islands divided by distances words can't cross. Our reason has dissolved into barbarism and our self has grown until it eclipsed the heavens. What is real is worthless and what is desired is paramount. Grasping at fantasy until, in livid frustration, we desperately seize whatever we can, however we can, to assert selfish control fueled by our inability to accept said futility. We no longer recognize limitations nor that reflection in the mirror. We want to be gods, no, God. But that sacrifice of humanity leaves only ash. No Phoenix shall rise. Lost. Forever lost. Islands scattered in a black sea.

Because that kind of shit always works.
Beat me to it.

The way that is phrased has some very troubling connotations that are likely part and parcel of what happened.

Sad but true and evocative poetry. Thanks for sharing that.

Two fatherless kids the 14 year old and the baby killed. If they came from a good family aka married parents who cared they would NEVER leave their child with a 14 year old who also comes from a broken home and is a bastard child..... like really
I suggest reading a few more articles. This is 2019 not 1809. Children born out of wedlock are no longer considered bastards, nor is sex out of wedlock a sin. The church and it's ideals are a dying relic of the past.

There are just as many married couples doing their kids bad by leaving them with shitty babysitters. Or no one at all. Or just committing the abuse themselves. Marriage has zero to do with anything in this article. For all we know his parents are married and he was babysitting the kids while they were at work.

Several other threads here would suggest that being married does not immunize one against being abusive.

Hahaha. Have you been reading here... or any news anywhere for very long.

Being a two parent household around here means there is twice as many parents around to beat, drown, roast in a car, stab, slash, chop up, shoot, drug, rape etc.

She is right, so stop being mad. Fred and Rose West NEVER hired a 14 year old babysitter to do the job for them.

Murder charges were dropped Thursday against a teenager charged with killing a 3-year-old toddler when he was just 14.
Johnathan Godwin (now 17) was released from custody after being held since August 2019, when the 3-year-old girl he was babysitting was found beaten to death.

As part of a plea deal reached with prosecutors, Godwin pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated child neglect and was sentenced as a youthful offender.
He must serve six years of probation with a number of special conditions. Among them, he must complete high school or obtain a GED, stay employed or in school, participate in mentoring programs and job training, and live with a parent until he is 18.

He can also have no contact with minors and may not babysit.
