The mother of a 7-month-old girl who died of multiple head injuries has been charged with murder and child abuse, a Kansas attorney said.

Shelby Dawn Johnson, 26, of Oxford was charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Jesslinn Hulett.

Jesslinn, was taken to a hospital on April 1 and died four days later.

Johnson allegedly killed her infant daughter either by “cruelly beating” or “shaking” the baby, according to court documents. The baby’s injuries to her head included: scalp contusions, internal bleeding, three bone fractures to her skull, swelling of her brain, bilateral retinal hemorrhages and “related head injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.”

The girl needed immediate medical treatment, but Johnson went back to bed and the baby’s father found her not breathing about an hour later, court documents allege.

Spencer said he does not intend to file any charges against Schuyler Hulett, Jesslinn’s father. After the first three weeks of the initial investigation, much of their time was spent determining which parent to charge, he said.

Jesslinn, who had four siblings and “one on the way,” would have turned 1-year-old on Aug. 12, her obituary states.

It was on the morning of April 1 — Easter Sunday — that Hulett took Jesslinn to the emergency room at Sumner Regional Medical Center, court documents state.

Six days later a neighbor told police he heard a man in Hulett’s Wellington home yell at a woman, “You killed my (expletive) baby.” Hulett admitted to an FBI investigator that he did accuse Johnson of killing their child, but he never saw her hurt Jesslinn.

An autopsy determined that the child had multiple head injuries and “healing fractures” to her ribs. It found her death to be a homicide.

Court documents state that Dr. Katherine Melhorn, a specialist on traumatic injuries to children, said the injuries that killed Jesslinn had to have happened on Easter morning. They were caused either by shaking the child and hitting her head or by striking her head “onto something hard at least three times.”

The child she was pregnant with at the time of Jesslin's death has been placed in foster care. There was no information regarding her other children.

She is free on bond until her trial scheduled for November 2019.

Shelby "After a workout like that you would be tired too" Johnson

We all know what the mom did is fucking hideous, but I'm thinking she was bit overwhelmed with caring for up to 5 kids, soon to be 6, and I wondering if her penis, Schuyler Hulett, might not have been much help with them.

Guessing he wasn’t much help being that they didn’t even live together. And I’m going to take a wild guess that the other 4 kids aren’t his.

Also, I agree anyone having 5 kids and one on the way at 26 might be overwhelmed. That’s why responsible people don’t do it. There are a lot of choices out there available for birth control and FREE

Appeal No. 122,243: State of Kansas v. Shelby Dawn Johnson

Sumner County: This appeal involves the district court's pretrial rulings on the admissibility of certain evidence in a murder prosecution for the death of a seven-month-old child. The State charged the child's mother with the crime. Prior to trial, the defendant sought to exclude certain testimony from the trial. The district court granted the motion, ruling that the proposed testimony violated the Kansas rules of evidence. The State now brings this interlocutory appeal, arguing the district court abused its discretion in excluding the State's proposed evidence at trial.

Huh? Could someone explain what this means? Did the case even go to trial? Lord please don’t tell she’s still running around spread legged.

The Sumner County Attorney's Office has dropped its case against a woman who had been accused of killing her 7-month-old daughter.

Shelby Johnson had previously been charged with second-degree murder, child abuse and aggravated child endangerment in the death of Jesslinn Hulett.

Sumner NewsCow reports the attorney's office dismissed the case without prejudice due to the "lack of sufficient evidence."
The case will be submitted back to the Wellington Police Department and the Sumner County Sheriff's Office for further investigation.

Jesslinn's father took her to a hospital in Sumner County on Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018 after she quit breathing. She'd suffered head injuries, healing rib fractures and retinal hemorrhages and died at a Wichita hospital four days later.

Jesslinn's death was ruled a homicide.
