Police gave horrific details of suspected child abuse in court Thursday of the death of a 5-year-old in a Redford motel.

Two people were charged in the girl's death - her 26-year-old mother Steffani Jones and her boyfriend 30-year-old Michael Deshawn Lewis. Lewis and Jones have both been charged with Felony Murder, Second Degree Murder and two counts of First Degree Child Abuse.

Both were arraigned Thursday with Jones visibly breaking down crying and Lewis emotionless.

Police and fire responded to calls of the girl not breathing, she had no vital signs and died at Beaumont Farmington Hills.

"The examination at that time showed multiple bruises on her back, legs and head. External vaginal tearing was also noted," said Det. Sgt. Jeffrey Bero Thursday in court. "At that time multiple bruises and healing injuries were found observed on the boy."

The 3-year-old was taken to Detroit Children's Hospital of Michigan by Child Protective Services, where he was found to have multiple bruises, swelling lacerations and a contusion to his liver, a distended abdomen and anemia.

"Lewis was questioned, he said he and Jones are the only ones to watch the children," Bero said. "He said that the girl said she felt sick that morning. he said he went to the office for help and when he came back, she was laying on the bed. Lewis said that the girl's swollen eye occurred because she fell after he picked her up out of bed.

"The boy's injuries came when he was playing on a slide at the park. He said that he uses a belt to discipline the both kids. And he also makes them do squats when they misbehave. The bruises are from playing rough."

Jones was later questioned and told police she and Lewis have been together 1-2 years and have domestic incidents once a week. She told police that the children "do get a whoopin" when they misbehave by she and Lewis, but said Lewis also uses his fists. She added he uses a knife sheath to discipline the kids.

She told police he watched both kids five days a week while she works and that Lewis recently said he "Could not watch the kids anymore and that she would have to figure something out."

Jones told police the girl's swollen eye was from a bedbug bite because the kids are made to sleep on the floor. She said that the girl recently was caught drinking from the toilet and had to be disciplined.

Police said that the Oakland County Medical Examiner autopsy showed internal bleeding, vaginal tearing, a torn adrenal gland, lacerated liver and multiple bruises.

Maybe if they gave her a drink of water when she asked she wouldn't drink from the toilet. Maybe if they did not yell and smack the children all the time they would not be afraid to ask for a drink. At 5 she could probably get her own drink of water from the tap if the adults had given her some pointers.

I hate weak, stupid females who think they just HAVE to have a "man" in their life, regardless. Regardless of whether they are willing to work or not, uncaring if they beat and/or rape her children. I hate him even more. He is a sick pedo, low ass coward, a BOY who needs to have his insides rearranged in the most painful way possible.

Randell Fuller is in shock after his 5-year-old daughter was found dead Tuesday morning at the Inn America in Redford.

"Hold onto your babies," Fuller said.

Police said his daughter, Lyric, was beaten by her own mother and her boyfriend. The little girl's body had cuts and bruises, internally and externally. Authorities said she showed injuries believed to be caused by sexual assaults. Her death is being investigated as a homicide.

Fuller loved his daughter, but her mother, Steffani Jones, left with Lyric about a year ago and cut the rest of the family out.

"She ran away from her whole family," said Desmond Fuller, Lyric's uncle.

Jones' 3-year-old son was also found badly injured. Police said the injuries came from constant beatings.

According to authorities, Jones admitted to hitting her children and said she knew her boyfriend, Michael Lewis, would savagely beat them.

The half-brother of a 5-year-old girl who police say was beaten to death in a Redford motel room "had injuries everywhere on his body except (the) bottom of (his) feet."

That detail is in court filings that shed light on what life was like for the 3-year-old boy and Lyric Jones in the days before Lyric died last month. The documents are part of the state's effort to terminate parental rights to the boy.

Steffani Jones, 26, the mother of both Lyric and the boy, and Jones' boyfriend, Michael Deshawn Lewis, 30, have been charged with felony murder, second-degree murder and two counts of first-degree child abuse.

"The mother admitted she saw Lewis punch Lyric in the stomach two days before she died," the petition said. "Notably, the mother has continued to leave the children with Lewis despite knowing he has punched and struck the children with implements."

Jones went to work at 7 a.m. June 25, the petition said. By 9:30 a.m., Lyric had stopped breathing.

The boy, speaking to a forensic interviewer at a child advocacy center, said he, Lyric and Lewis were watching TV in the motel room when Lyric began throwing up and died. He described Lewis as having "an attitude."

Law enforcement authorities discovered that the boy had 26 injuries to his back, torso and under his arms, the petition said. His injuries included a laceration on his liver, multiple rib fractures, abrasions, bruising and scars.

The boy told an investigator that a fresh, U-shaped mark on his lower left side happened when "Mike" burned him.

Jones attributed her son's scars to him scratching bug bites and falling in the shower, the petition said. Authorities have alleged that both Lyric and the boy had been beaten for drinking water out of the toilet.

The boy is now in the care of a relative.

The petition noted that the boy's father, a 26-year-old Detroit man, told investigators that he did not realize he was the child's legal father and had not seen the boy since he was an infant. The man also said that he is "on the run from the police" and cannot provide for the boy.

The court found that the boy should not be returned to his parents. The court also ordered a mental health assessment and trauma therapy for him.

Mom is the only one working.
Living in a motel room.
Lazy ass unemployed penis watching kids he isn't related to.
Tell me there are situations like this that don't end up with abused or dead kids.
My wife lost her job and her house and ended up living in a hotel with her three daughters. I met her at this low point, helped her get her life together, married her, and put two of them in college (the third is sixteen now). It CAN get better.

Nearly four months after five-year-old Lyric Jones died of what medical examiners determined was blunt force trauma, her mother Steffani Jones, 26, appeared for a preliminary hearing Friday that reviewed the examination of evidence.

The hearing did not answer questions about whether Jones, who was at work when her daughter died in the care of Lewis, should or should not be charged with the death.

resenting evidence, prosecutors showed a video taken from Jones' phone and given to the Michigan State Police.

The video shows Lewis yelling at Lyric, who apparently dropped an electronic device into the toilet. The footage left Jones and Randell Fuller, Lyric's father and a witness in the case, audibly crying.

"What the (expletive) you lying for?" Lewis yelled, along with other expletives, at the 5-year-old.

The prosecution also explicitly detailed the "brutal" injuries sustained by both children which, if they had not led to death for Lyric, would be classified as first-degree child abuse.

The prosecution also read hospital and autopsy records detailing that Lyric and her little brother both had extensive scarring, indicating a long history of physical abuse.

But the defense argued that, because Jones was at work at the time of Lyric's death, she could not be accused of aiding and abetting even if there was a history of abuse. The defense also noted that police at the scene on June 25 did not check Jones for injury or take any forensic photographs of her. So it is unknown if she had sustained injuries from abuse around that time.

On the question of whether Jones aided and abetted Lewis, the court decided to hold another session Nov. 22. At that time, the judge is expected to make a ruling on whether there's enough evidence to bind over both Lewis and Jones.
