Adriel King Alexander
July 6th 2009 ~ August 10th 2009

A beautiful 5-week-old boy was sentenced to death in 2009 for the crime of crying.

Adriel Alexander’s father celebrated his son’s birth by shaving “it’s a boy” onto the back of his own head.

Five weeks later, Adriel was dead after Shelton Alexander punched him six times and dropped him on the floor, according to testimony at his trial.

Alexander, 22, admitted hitting his infant son when he was half awake because the child was crying and Alexander was trying to sleep.

A Dallas County jury sent Alexander to prison for 25 years after finding him guilty of injury to a child.

Jurors refused to give Alexander the same sentence he gave his son and he will be eligible for parole after serving half his sentence.

The panel left without commenting. Alexander’s attorney, Paul Johnson, said jurors told attorneys that, during deliberations, they immediately rejected the extremes of Alexander’s possible sentence — life or probation.

The baby killer's mother, Bridgette Alexander, and other family members testified during the punishment phase of the trial, hoping to give jurors reasons to show leniency. His relatives said he was a good man who killed the baby when he wasn’t “in his right mind.”

“I know my son loved his baby, their baby,” his mother testified. “He would have done anything for Adriel.” (like punching him in the stomach)

When Adriel was injured, he was lying on the bed next to Alexander, according to testimony. Alexander hit Adriel when the baby’s crying woke him up.

Alexander was trying to sleep after not having done so for several days. According to testimony, Alexander spent some of that time skipping work to party at a strip club. He also smoked marijuana dipped in prescription cough syrup.

Adriel suffered rib fractures, liver lacerations and other injuries. He also had a broken rib that was already healing at the time of his death, according to testimony.

Alexander’s attorney, Paul Johnson, told jurors that Alexander must live with “the tragedy he put in motion” and asked for a lighter sentence.

“We can’t bring back Adriel Alexander,” Johnson said. “Don’t you know he’d trade his own life if he could?”
