The family of a 5-month-old girl said she has died after being taken off life support at Primary Children’s Hospital Friday morning.

West Valley City Police said they will meet with the District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday to determine the charges to be filed against the teen babysitter accused of committing abuse that led to the infant’s death.

Police said they responded to Shadowbrook Apartments in West Valley City on Tuesday night after receiving a report about a child who was not breathing.

First responders performed CPR on the baby girl until she could be taken to Jordan Valley West Medical Center, then flown to Primary Children’s Hospital.

The infant girl’s family told FOX 13 that the girl turned five months old Friday morning.

The 16-year-old who had been babysitting the girl has been arrested and booked into a juvenile detention facility, and remains in custody Friday.

Doctors told the family it wasn’t the first time she had been shaken.

“That part makes me angry. It’s very upsetting. It’s very upsetting,” Christensen said.

Christensen and Adalyn’s great aunt, Elena Ratcliffe, said the boy had been babysitting her and her two-year-old brother for a few months.

“I know he lived with them for a little while or just stayed with them for a little while. Their families are close,” Christensen said.

They can’t fathom how he could hurt such an innocent, sweet girl.

“If he was so frustrated why wouldn’t he just speak up and say hey you know what it’s too much. I can’t take care of these two babies and you know, just walk away from it,” Christensen said.

Adalyn’s parents decided to donate her organs and they say it’s bringing them some comfort.

“Because they can’t save their own little girl and that they’re able to help at least 8 other kids, that helps,” Ratcliffe said.

Interesting. From the above link:

Melanie Christensen is the baby’s aunt. She said there are no words to describe the pain the parents are feeling after having to take their baby Adalyn off life support.
.....
“It’s upsetting that it could’ve been avoided,” Christensen said.

A 16 year old male babysitter and a shaken baby. Not a good sign.

In the interview with police, the boy told officers he watched the child in order to "work off his community service hours," the charges state. He was sentenced to community service and probation after he was charged with drug possession in January, juvenile court records show, in a case that followed earlier drug possession and theft charges. Each count was a class B misdemeanor.

So why did any one think it was a good idea for him to babysit?

What the FUCK!?!??

How fucking stupid are these idiot trash parents!? Letting ANY male babysit your child is beyond reprehensible and careless, pretty much shows the parents have NO regard for the safety of their kid AT ALL. But a 16 year old with a criminal history!?!?!?

WOW.

The parents need to be put in a cage as well. I can not bleieve they didnt WANT this to happen.

A 17-year-old babysitter charged in the May death of an infant will be released from a youth detention center and will stay with his mother, who promised a judge she will install special locks and a security system to ensure he does not sneak out.

Third District Juvenile Julie Lund ordered the teenager to wear an ankle monitor while on home detention ahead of his four-day trial in December. She also ordered an evaluation of the boy’s mental health during the pretrial hearing.

Parents of the 5-month-old, Adalyn Monson, and prosecutor Steven Grayson argued he is a flight risk. They urged Lund not to release him.

Lund explained to the baby killer why she kept him detained since he was charged. “I wanted to keep you safe and I wanted to keep you around. That’s still my concern. However I do believe that with systems of care in place, that perhaps we could let you out.”

She referenced a plan social workers have created to address the teen’s behavioral and emotional needs while he is home, though she also acknowledged youth defendants sometimes cut off the ankle monitors.

The teen’s attorney, Sam Pappas, said his client has received “glowing reports with regard to his conduct” while in detention and his therapists no longer have concerns about suicidal ideation. Pappas said he is awaiting a report on the child’s death from the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office.

Sounds to me like the best he's ever done in his life was done while incarcerated. Best for him and best for society to charge him as an adult and give him the max sentence allowed by law.

I do not know how the family was able to listen to the judge having concern about whether this burden on society feels suicidal.

I am sure the family is already punishing themselves for giving this monster a chance to do his community service at the expense of their child's life.

The teen should be named so that the public will know he is a danger to children.

I don't think probation or a few years at a youth facility will fix what is wrong with him.
He’s a Minor

Of Course he’s on perfect behavior now. No kids around to murder!!

Seems that lately there’s been a run on torturing & killing 5 month olds. Is that an especially fun age to abuse them?

They should also have been given a legal punishment for endangering that baby as they did.

Calling the 2019 killing of a nearly 5-month-old girl “horrific,” a Utah judge sentenced her teenage babysitter Monday to a secure detention facility for the child’s death.

Juvenile Judge Mark May sentenced the now 18-year-old sitter Monday, telling him that “what you did was horrific. You caused the death of a 4-month-old baby.”

The teenager faces a separate allegation of rape in juvenile court, although no details about the case were released Monday. The Deseret News is opting not to name him at this time.
Grayson argued for secure detention, saying the sentence is needed to keep the public safe. The teenager has failed to take responsibility and continues to deny the allegations, he added.

The teenager, who wore a mask for the sentencing hearing held over video, didn’t oppose the sentence.

“I feel like secure is the best route for me,” he told the judge. “I feel like I can get more help there.”
Defense attorney Sam Pappas said the detention center has “probably been the most supportive and stable environment” that his client has lived in.

The judge noted it’s up to Utah’s Juvenile Justice Services to determine how long the teenager stays in the secure facility. The agency can retain custody of a youth up until age 21.

It is possible that this is a case of a personality that goes crazy if abused, plus an abusive shit household, come together like a nice fat shit sandwich.

and will stay with his mother, who promised a judge she will install special locks and a security system to ensure he does not sneak out.

orly. She likes controlling others much, maybe? Maybe one day we get the details on why her kid is so fucked in the head and see how much of it points back to the home life.

But a 16 year old with a criminal history!?!?!?

I'm guessing that since it was community service it was OH SUCH A GOOD DEAL, as in FREE BABYSITTING. Can a deal get better than that? ohw8 dead baby.

a Utah judge

I'm getting the impression that Utah is almost a wall-to-wall Mormon cult, with a few loners living outside of the cult struggling to live with the psychological damage inflicted on them by relatives.

Defense attorney Sam Pappas said the detention center has “probably been the most supportive and stable environment” that his client has lived in.

I bet it has been.

wow drugs, theft, killing a baby and rape and those are only the ones he has been caught for doing ,and only 18 years old, wow and part of those 18 years were passed in one type of custody or another. What will do when he grows up? or even when he is released on his 21st birthday or before? I am pretty sure he will add many more entrees to his already quite substantial resume of misdeeds :(

So, let me get this straight: a 16-year-old junkie/drug dealer is tasked to babysit not only a 2-year-old and a 5-month-old? The parents are stupid af, as this is public record. Second, even at 16, he's a grown man who definitely knew fucking better, and should have been tried and sentenced like the adult he is. And lastly, how IN THE FUUUUUUUUCK did the idiot parents not know Adalyn was shaken by this asshole before? Instead of juvie, this man needed a shotgun blast to the dome. 16+ is an adult to me. Love you too, Sugar Cookie.

He’s a sociopath. He will learn to mimic normal emotions and behaviors and will kill again. He needs to be locked up for life.
