A New Jersey police officer was arrested Wednesday in connection with the death of his 3-month-old daughter last year.

Daniel Bannister, 31, an officer with the Ewing Township Police Department, faces a murder charge in what prosecutors called an "ongoing pattern of abuse" and the December 2018 death of Hailey Bannister.

The girl's mother, Catherine Bannister, 29, was also arrested Wednesday and is charged with second-degree endangerment of a child's welfare.

An autopsy performed after Hailey's death showed she died from blunt-impact trauma, including skull fractures and a subdural hemorrhage.

"The nature of Hailey’s injuries indicated an ongoing pattern of abuse,” Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri said in a statement, according to NJ.com.

Paramedics were dispatched to the Bannister home on Dec. 5 over a report of an unresponsive child. The girl was found in cardiac arrest and was not breathing.

She died in a hospital on Dec. 11.

A New Jersey homicide detective has been charged Wednesday with killing his 3-month-old daughter and raising more than $17,000 after her death on a GoFundMe page, according to reports.

Daniel Bannister, 31, is accused of killing his daughter, Hailey Rose, in December in what prosecutors called an “ongoing pattern of abuse.”

The girl’s mother, Catherine Bannister, started a GoFundMe page that raised more than $17,000. The campaign was marked as completed as of Thursday.

Bannister, who was charged with child endangerment said on the page that her daughter had a catastrophic brain injury and wasn’t expected to recover, NJ.com reported.

The couple also has a son, according to reports.

When Catherine and Daniel Bannister’s baby girl stopped breathing and was hospitalized in critical condition late last year, generous donors poured more than $17,000 in a GoFundMe account to help the young family of four.

Daniel Bannister, 31, was an Ewing police officer and Catherine Bannister, 29, a kindergarten teacher at a Trenton school. The “Hope for Hailey Rose” GoFundMe campaign was launched by a family friend two days after the 3-month-old was hospitalized in critical condition on Dec. 5. Hailey died less than a week later.

But now that both parents have been charged in connection with Hailey’s death, the fundraising platform has launched a review of the campaign.

A spokesperson for GoFundMe said the company’s Trust & Safety team is investigating and has “reached out for more information.” Any donor who wants their money returned can make a request and have a refund processed in the meantime, the spokesperson said.

“It’s important to know that the platform is backed by the GoFundMe Guarantee, which means funds are guaranteed to go to the right place or donors will get a refund," the spokesperson said.

Recently released court document paint the picture of a pattern of abuse by a New Jersey cop accused of murdering his 3-month-old daughter, including bruises around her mouth and bruised ribs more than two months before she died.

Daniel Bannister, a Ewing Township Police Officer, abused his child by pressing his hand against her face and squeezing her too tight, his wife claims in text messages included in an affidavit that has been provided by the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office.

The affidavit that revealed new details and a timeline in the case, in which Bannister is accused of murdering his daughter, Hailey, and is wife is accused of not reporting the abuse to authorities:

On Oct. 4, 2018, his wife Catherine first noticed suspicious bruising around Hailey's mouth, which led her to question Daniel. In the conversation, Catherine identified Daniel's practice of "pressing his finger against Hailey's mouth as a method to stop her cries" as a possible cause of the bruises;

On Oct. 9, 2018, Catherine exchanged text messages with her babysitter in which she described Daniel as "abusive." In a lengthy exchange, she went on to say that she told Daniel he would not touch Hailey again unless he was educated in early childhood development. After the babysitter offered to let Catherine and both children come live with her, Catherine declined and asked the babysitter not to report Daniel's treatment of Hailey to authorities;

On Nov. 1, 2018, Catherine located bruising on Hailey's left rib area, which led her to accuse Daniel of causing the bruising by gripping Hailey too tightly;

On the morning and early afternoon of Nov. 23, 2018, Daniel was alone with Hailey and the Bannisters' 2-year-old son. Hailey began showing signs of skull fractures, including excessive vomiting that continued into Nov. 24. A doctor who reviewed Hailey's medical records said Hailey likely suffered her ultimately fatal head injuries on Nov. 23;

On Nov. 24, Daniel tried to prevent his wife from bringing Hailey to the doctor, but Catherine took her to the pediatrician anyway. From there, they went to Capital Health Center at Hopewell.

On Nov. 28, 2018, Catherine confronted Daniel about his treatment of, and attitude toward, Hailey;

On Dec. 11, 2018, after spending several days in the hospital, Hailey Bannister was pronounced deceased.

Additionally, phone records show that Catherine was aware of the head injuries and suspected that her child had suffered a concussion, but never raised these concerns with the doctor or asked for diagnostic testing. She had opportunities to do so during visits to the doctor and the hospital on Nov. 24, 26 and 28, and Dec. 3, according to investigators.

In the days after Hailey Bannister's death, Catherine told investigators that Hailey was a "cranky baby" and that "Daniel had a hard time bonding with her."

A suspended New Jersey police officer has been indicted for the murder of his baby girl last year.

Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri announced Friday that a grand jury has indicted Ewing Township police officer Daniel Bannister on a first-degree murder charge in the December 2018 death of 3-month-old Hailey Bannister.

The grand jury indicted Bannister's wife, Catherine, on a second-degree reckless manslaughter charge.

Both Bannisters also face a second-degree child endangerment charge, Onofri said.

NBC10 visited the couple's home in July for comment. A man, who did not identify himself, claimed Bannister had been falsely accused.

Bannister's neighbor told NBC10 he had seen warning signs.

"He kept getting real aggressive with me," the neighbor said. "Screaming a whole bunch of nonsense all around the neighborhood."
