Two parents face child abuse charges after police say they smoked heroin as their two young girls sat in the back seat of the car they were living in.
Police said they pulled over Alfredo Paredes and Karla Millan after Paredes was seen making several traffic violations, including failing to stop for a stop sign.
Police found drug paraphernalia on the front driver side of the vehicle, the driver door pocket and in the back seat, where two girls, ages 5 and 7, were sitting, according to court documents.
The children were not wearing seatbelts and had access to the paraphernalia, the court documents say.
Documents show there were also razor blades on the floor of the back where the children were sitting without any shoes on.
Police said the children were disheveled and wearing dirty clothes and did not appear to have been bathed in two to three weeks. Police said there were also living flies in the girls' hair.
The children told police they had been living out of the car for at least two weeks and had not eaten any food in more than a day, according to court documents.
Police said the children told them that after both parents smoke heroin in the car with them in the back, they have family time together.
The girls were taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Hospital personnel told police the children were dehydrated, but drug screens were negative.
The Department of Child Services evaluated the children at the hospital and took them into custody.
