According to court documents a Tehachapi infant suffered several severe injuries, including multiple skull fractures, before his death. His parents are now facing first degree murder charges.

On October 17, 2-month-old Abel James Norwood was taken to Kern Medical by ambulance for a fever. According to the documents, once at Kern Medical, doctors discovered that Abel was suffering from "numerous life threatening injuries" and was flown to Valley Children's Hospital Madera.

According to court documents, doctors said Abel had minimal brain activity at that time. Abel was also suffering from multiple injuries, including skull fractures, rib fractures, and a fractured left arm.

Abel's parents, James Norwood and Brittney Collins, were arrested and have been charged with four felony counts, including murder. They have already pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Matthew Norwood, a Tehachapi man who's son was found with multiple head fractures, has been found guilty by a Kern County jury in the death of the 2-month-old infant.

According to court documents for this case, on Oct. 17, 2018, Abel James Norwood was taken to Kern Medical by ambulance for a fever. Once at Kern Medical, doctors discovered that Abel was suffering from "numerous life-threatening injuries" and was flown to Valley Children's Hospital Madera via helicopter, documents said.

Norwood, 31, and Able's mother, Brittney Collins, were both arrested and charged with first-degree murder and assault on a child under 8 resulting in death.

Jury deliberations for Collins are still underway.

The parents of a 2-month-old boy who died after suffering multiple broken bones and skull fractures were sentenced Wednesday to life terms in prison, the father for inflicting the injuries, and the mother for failing to report her husband’s repeated abuse of the infant.

Matthew Norwood, 31, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, court records show. Brittney Collins, 30, received a sentence of 15 years to life.

The baby, Abel, died Oct. 24, 2018, a week after he was brought to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera. He had injuries that were in different stages of healing, prosecutors said, indicating ongoing abuse.

Prosecutors said Collins ignored Norwood’s assaults. In a video played at trial, Collins told investigators she saw Norwood squeeze Abel, choke him and slap him on the head, and she never intervened or contacted authorities.
