A teen father faces first degree murder charges after police say he beat his eight-month-old daughter to death.

According to Des Moines Police, 17-year-old Jayden Straight turned himself in to police early Sunday morning. Along with the murder charge, the teen is also charged with child endangerment resulting in death. Police say he was the only person home with the child during the time-frame in which doctors believe the baby was injured. The baby’s mother and Straight’s mother are not part of the investigation.

Investigators say Straight took baby Raija to the hospital on Friday afternoon. Medical staff alerted police immediately, believing the child had been abused. The child died Saturday evening from internal and traumatic injures to the head. Police say the child lived with Straight at his family’s home.

Straight made his first appearance in court on Sunday. He is being tried as an adult.

Jayden Straight is charged with First Degree Murder for allegedly killing his 8-month-old daughter, Raija, in July. She died as the result of skull fractures and broken ribs allegedly suffered while she was in her father's care.

Straight was 17 at the time of the crime. He turns 18 on Friday, August 31st. At a court hearing on Thursday he requested that he be allowed to stay in juvenile custody to continue therapy. Prosecutors argue he is eligible for similar care in the adult court system. A judge did not rule on the request Thursday.

A trial date is now set for Straight. He will go on trial on October 29th, 2018. If convicted he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

A Des Moines teen accused of killing his own daughter, will be tried as an adult.

Jayden Straight was 17-years-old when he allegedly killed his eight-month-old daughter, Raija Straight, in July. He turned 18 a few weeks later.

A judge ruled Wednesday he will be tried for first-degree murder as an adult.

Raija died on July 14th, a day after her father took the unresponsive baby to the hospital. A criminal complaint says the girl had multiple skull fractures, a ruptured spleen, several broken ribs, and massive retinal hemorrhaging.

The trial was to be held in February 2019 but no information is available.
The family of a teenage father accused of beating his eight-month-old daughter to death is now speaking out, saying Jayden Straight would never harm his child and instead putting the blame on someone else.

"It's really sad because the baby is gone, Jayden is gone," says Carla Mickael, Straight's grandmother.

Mickael says Straight was very active in his daughter Raija's life and considered her a top priority. She says he would never want to harm the child.

"I think he’s being wrongfully accused of something that he never did."

Mickael says the accusations are false and claims the injuries came from the baby's mother a few days prior. She says the couple's relationship was unhealthy.

"He had noticed some bruising on the babies ribs after he got home," she says. "He knew something was wrong. He probably should have done something about that."

"He called us this morning and he told us all that he loved us. He sounds like hes willing to take the fall if that's what he has to do because he loves his child," Mickael says.

A Des Moines man who was 17 years old when he violently shook and killed his baby will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Jayden Straight was sentenced to a total of 100 years in prison on Friday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, willful injury and child endangerment.

His daughter, 8-month-old Raija Straight, died in the hospital last July. Police said she had multiple skull fractures, broken ribs and internal injuries when her father brought her in. Raija's mother says her daughter was not only shaken but hit multiple times by Jayden Straight as well.

Jayden Straight turned 18 years old a few weeks after Raija's murder.

I really applaud the interrogators they have a lot of patience to do deal with imbeciles like this.

The mom of this loser has seven kids and the house was disgusting. How could the bio-mom allow these people to have any contact with this beautiful baby. I get he was the bio-dad but she should have cut her loses and accepting she won a stupid prize with this as a baby daddy,
