e was starved, doused in motor oil, thrown into a dumpster, and trapped in the back of a dump truck. Yet somehow, "Rumpke” the cat is still alive.
Now, Rumpke is up for adoption, but the kitty’s foster, Cathy Madewell, says his journey to get to this point has been a rough one.
“The story was heartbreaking, but from the first minute we met him, he’s been a joy," she said.
In April, a Rumpke employee showed up at the Brown County Humane Society with the cat in tow. Rescuers rushed him to the vet. They learned he was starving, suffering from infections, and his teeth were so bad off they had to be removed. On top of that, rescuers believe someone deliberately doused him with tar and motor oil.
“I just can’t understand why people do the things they do to helpless creatures," said Madewell.
Rumpke, rescuers said, had been in a Georgetown-area dumpster and ended up compacted inside a dump truck. The Rumpke employee noticed him when he came tumbling out with the trash.
Humane Society staffers said it looked like someone neglected and abandoned the cat.
“Perhaps they can find the person, and there would be some penalty for having treated him this way," said Madewell.
Rumpke has been diagnosed with a lifelong immune compromising disease, Madewell says, and that means he needs a little extra attention.
“He literally plows forward through his care and his hardships and overcomes everything," she said.
Rumpke has since gained weight and is living a life full of love with his foster family. However, it is time, rescuers say, for him to move to his final destination. To help him get there, his adoption fee has been waived by a sponsor.
Rescuers believe Rumpke is a rare Turkish Angora breed, so they are working with other organizations to try and find his possible former owner. Then, the dog warden could investigate and potentially press charges.
