The Little Rock Police Department has charged one man with capital murder after the death of a two-month-old.
Authorities said in a tweet that officers responded to Arkansas Children's Hospital on April 14 at around 7 p.m. after receiving reports of a two-month-old infant, later identified as Kaia Pennington, arriving and suffering from severe injuries.
When officers arrived, they made contact with 22-year-old Tamar Pennington, the infant’s father, and the victim’s mother, 21-year-old Keiaura Smith.
Hospital staff told officers that the child was in critical condition, suffering from severe internal and external injuries.
The parents were transported to the Major Crimes Division at the 12th Street Substation and interviewed, according to authorities.
After the interviews, Smith was released without charges, and Pennington was charged with 1st-degree battery.
After the infant had succumbed to injuries on April 18, Pennington's charges were then upgraded to capital murder.
