Investigators in Florida say a mobile home fire in which two children were found dead was intentionally set after a 27-year-old man allegedly killed both children.

John Henry Walston Jr., 27, is charged with two counts of premeditated murder, one count of sexual assault of a child under 12 and one count of arson, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. He is being held in jail on no bond.

Two children, ages 7 and 9, and a dog were found dead after a mobile home fire in Pensacola. The home was fully engulfed in flames when Escambia County Fire Rescue arrived on the scene just before 1 a.m. Friday.

Sheriff Chip Simmons said in an update Saturday that investigators determined Walston intentionally set fire to the home after sexually assaulting one of the children then killing both of them. Walston ran to safety himself after setting the fire, according to Simmons.

Why were the children staying at this man's trailer?

Tyler Smith, who is father to victim Rayden Smith and stepfather to Vayden Orum, told the station that the home belonged to Walston, adding that he'd known the suspect for years.

Smith said the two children had been staying at Walston's at the time of the fire, per WEAR ABC 3 News.

Neighbor John Wenzel said of the victims' mother, "She went into the trailer trying to get them. That's a mother's love....That's why she's in the Mobile Burn Center. She went inside the house trying to get her kids, but [it was] too hot. They finally got her out of there," per the station.

The suspect has also been accused of killing an animal after a dog was found dead inside the home, the publication stated. Walston's first court date is expected to be Nov. 26.

Walston told investigators that he had molested the female child "on top of her clothes" two weeks before the children's death because the child "considered him her 'boyfriend,' " the police report said. Walston told investigators the statement made him 'feel weird, but good.'"

Walston told investigators he molested the child again on the night on Nov. 7 before she went to bed in his room.

"After the kids went to bed, Walston stated he started to drink and began to become depressed," the report said. "Walston stated that he hated his life and made the decision to kill the kids."

He told investigators he went to the living room and stabbed the boy in the neck. He then went back to his bedroom where he "slit (the girl's) throat while she slept on the floor."

"After cutting (her) throat, Walston stated that she made noises and then spoke out to him that 'I'm getting cold,'" the report said. "To this, Walston stated he then covered her with a blanket."

According to the report, Walston then set the house on fire and originally planned to die with them in the fire, but said he "couldn't go through with it."

There was a third child in the house who survived, and Walston told investigators he "spared (the boy) because 'he's my best friend.'"

Both of Walston's murder charges are capital felonies, which are eligible for the death penalty if the Office of the State Attorney chooses to pursue it.

His sexual assault charge is also a capital felony and is eligible for the death penalty after the Florida legislature passed a bill in 2023 allowing defendants convicted of raping a child under 12 to be sentenced to death.

One child as a best friend and another child as his girlfriend, I think we know what mental level this guy operated on. Then he chickened out on his suicide, if he had ever intended that in the first place. Death penalty is the only way forward for this murderous asshole.

well the one good thing going for that state is the law about raping a child under 12 y.o. .. now lets see of they implement it :) but the con about that law is that their might be a lot more dead children under under 12 y.o. because same penalty for murder or their rape so maybe kill them so you won't leave a child that can speak to tell on them :( therefor taking take a chance of getting away with their murder instead ...
